Are Investment Costs of Business Internet Marketing Higher Than ...

Having just started to use internet marketing in our own business and trying to bring together all the different components to deliver a set of desired outcomes, we have discovered it is not a simple task. We have created a huge amount of online content from websites, blog sites, micro-blogging, and social media network participation. But and it is a big but, how do you convert all this activity (or lack of it) into a coherent message that brings visitors to your target online content and transcends to registrations and / or sales?

To be honest we have been merrily creating web content, accounts on twitter, Facebook pages, blogs and regularly posting but without paying specific attention to the direction or the message. This has been a conscious choice on our part as we were not ready to join everything up yet, so we just started by increasing our online profile until we were set to go. I think this is one of the big hurdles for most people entering Internet Marketing at any level is? why am I doing this? Why am I posting content onto Blogs, twittering, when no one is visiting anyway? I?m not reading my other 1000 followers tweets, so I am sure they are not reading mine! If I?m the only one ready what I?m writing I?d sooner not bother! 2 Blog posts a day, why? for what? What am I going to say? What difference will it make?

We expect those new to Internet Marketing to blindly accept that ?you should get a blog, you should use Twitter and join Facebook? trust me? you will see the benefit, later on everything will be much clearer??

Here then is the issue? of course signing up to these services, Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Linked in or any other social media platform is not in itself going to make any difference to a business. Just the same as printing some leaflets for a mailshot and leaving them in the garage, or attending networking meetings and not talking to anyone, these won?t make much impact either.

The facts are that Internet Marketing is a complex business. It performs the functions of building individual?s profiles and credibility, Brand awareness and product / service sales via one medium. Each of these areas requires different techniques, services and strategies online, but you can?t go about this in a half baked, apathetic manner. Internet Marketing has the ability to transform businesses, enable small companies to compete with the ?big boys? and build new enterprises from nothing but not by making one blog post a week, the odd twitter tweet now and then and complaining that sales haven?t increased yet!

So what is the reality? The reality is this, that Internet marketing provides the ability to reach 100,000?s of people and quickly, but it won?t happen without effort? A LOT OF IT!

Most Small Business?s are owned privately, very often by the entrepreneur who found a niche, designed a new product or took advantage of an opportunity. These individuals are often technical people and suffer from the old ?Feast and Famine? syndrome that finds refuge in Micro and small businesses. When we?re in Sales mode we are extremely busy, when servicing customers, prospects dry up? then we?re found scratching around for business again which happens, eventually, months after we needed it.

Now typical business owners don?t think of themselves as sales people and will readily admit they don?t like this part of the business and yet without it the business can?t survive. I?ve heard many a business owner admit they are not sales people, ?I?m basically too honest to be a sales person? as if a sales person?s role was to somehow convince someone to buy a product they don?t need and don?t want. Well, let us now separate Marketing from Sales.

Marketing is encouraging people to consider your products and services? visitors if you like, whereas Sales is the matching of the customers requirements to your offerings. At no point in this is there any persuasion or manipulation? better still, much of this sales process can be automated with Internet Marketing. Marketing requires an audience to market too? sales requires us to provide information, substantiate our offering and provide a method to engage with us.

You will hear this time and time again with the Internet Marketing crowd? ?the money is in the list!? and if we are to market successfully then having a list to inform on a regular basis is absolutely essential. If we apply this to offline marketing, most of the hard work in sending out a mailshot was creating a quality list of people in the first place? our target audience! If we are to engage the services of a Direct Marketing company for a telephone campaign? at some point before this a list must be found, either from an existing database or bought from an organisation specialising in such Lists, the higher the quality the better.

So let us now see what relevance our Online ? Internet Marketing activities have in identifying a target market. Consider Facebook, Linked-in, Twitter, Blog subscribers and Registrations for an ezine or other regular communication? what are these?

They are lists of course! lists of people who in some way have connected with you and are probably comfortable to receive correspondence from you or your business. Herein lies the secret then behind why we should bother at all to seek people out, follow and be followed. List building? and the good news is that it can be quite good fun too!

Now in our business we have 5 main products offerings? some of these products have an overlapping potential audience, others do not. It may be necessary therefore to have multiple accounts for Twitter and / or a separate Facebook page for the different audience. Already you can see that if we are to manage, maintain and post for each product on a regular basis (desirable) then this is a substantial amount of work.

One of the difficulties that some of my colleagues have with building a large list of friends or followers is, ?How can you possibly keep in touch with all these people?, I struggle to stay in touch with my immediate relatives? and for sure, personally corresponding with 60,000 people is not viable? but this is not the point.

These social sites represent a massive network of interconnected people, you are not necessarily communicating on a 1-2-1 basis (although you can do this) but rather are broadcasting what you want to say to everyone who is connected and often to their immediate connections as well!! Suddenly we have the ability to get a message to a very large audience with a single post.

Now? most people certainly with Twitter won?t see your post, and a good many won?t in Facebook or Linked-In either, however this is not an issue. It is not our problem to worry about who will see our posting or not, that is not our responsibility and we should avoid getting attached to the outcome. Our role is to provide the information (post), that is it? Now there is a magic number in marketing and sales this is 3%. This little number is very important. It is the recognised average response rate in a cold market? sometimes it can be more, often less. If we sent out 1000 mailshots then it would be acceptable to set a benchmark of 30 as the number of positive responses. This is about the same % that I have experienced in responses to click-through?s on Tweets and Facebook postings. Taking these numbers if we tweeted with a follower list of 30,000 then we could expect around 900 visits. We have absolutely no idea which ones will click the link? or tell a friend or retweet, however the figures can be quite staggering? Imagine if you worked with other ?Big List? owners and offered a percentage to tweet to their lists? and you did this 3 times per day? the number of visits could become very large indeed.

The lists provide us with a ?potential market? for our products and the purpose of this article is not to go into the detailed techniques for building lists, only that it should be very high up on the list of priorities. So how much time, money and effort should be put into this exercise?

The answer to this question depends on the nature of a business, the ideal customer profile and many other factors, clearly a restaurant has a different set of requirements to someone selling a digital product (such as an ebook) globally. The first thing is to decide an Internet Marketing strategy which is complimentary to the business, once this is defined then the activities required become much clearer.

Once the basic Architecture of the marketing is defined then comes the work and the Investment. If I look at our business as an example, we have invested in three key areas, Colateral, People and services. Lets look at what is involved in each of these -:

Collateral

We have 5 blogs, 6 websites (some complex, some a single page), 7 Twitter accounts, Facebook (4 Business Pages), Linked-In, Ecademy, Hub Pages, StumbleUpon, Squidoo and other online social networking accounts, all these had to be set up, populated, and now managed on an ongoing basis. This is not something which can be done in 20 minutes per day. We have to work all of these resources on a regular basis to keep ourselves in the ?Public eye?.

People

We have invested in 1 full time person, plus both myself and another member of staff allocate 3 or 4 hours per day to Internet Marketing activities. Firstly staff require training to use the tools that enable us to work our internet marketing, including analyze results. These resources manage our social networking sites, engage with our contacts frequently, update profiles as things change and post new content constantly. This cost alone is over $3000 per calendar month, developing and building our online presence.

Services

We utilise a number of ?helper? services which are online and rented monthly, these include subscriptions to some Business Networks, Shopping cart and checkout services, Databases that contain sign-ups for ezines and regular communication, Membership platforms, Blogging services and many many more. None of these services are hugely expensive month on month but vital to continue our Online Marketing activities.

In Conclusion

Business Internet Marketing ? Taking an offline business and using Internet Marketing techniques to increase sales utilises many of the techniques and tools that conventional Internet Marketing has developed and built over the past 8-10 years. We have all heard the stories of individuals with no overheads generating large monthly incomes without setting foot outside their door, but Internet Marketing is moving into a new phase, one where Offline Businesses will seek to engage the Internet to work for them.

I speak with many Micro and Small businesses on a regular basis and most are oblivious to Internet Marketing and what it could do for them, whether this is because no one has yet bothered to show them, or there is a fear and reluctance to dance with the unknown, or a bit of both perhaps. One thing is for sure, Business Internet Marketing will be deployed by every business over the coming 10-20 years and it is set to be one of the largest markets worldwide.

As we saw with offline marketing in the past where we had PR, Advertising and Marketing agencies, so we shall see the emergence of similar businesses offering Business Internet Marketing services. Traditional companies in this marketing space will need to evolve and offer a completely new range of services The print industry went through a similar metamorphosis some years back, when pre-press production moved entirely to computers and revolutionized the marketplace.

As the Internet Marketing industry matures and the ?Get Rich Quick? mentality fades, successful Internet Marketers will bring a wealth of experience and begin to offer professional Business Internet Marketing solutions to Small and Medium sized businesses. Not shackled with the conventional trappings of offices the Business Internet Marketers will manage a network of global outsourced resources to deliver high quality, low cost Internet Market solutions. The services will include the whole range of activities from setting up infrastructure services such as Blogs or Shopping carts to transactional activities such as managing Twitter accounts, searching and posting tweets, finding / posting suitable blog posts, even writing articles and sending email campaigns.

Without doubt we are on the edge of yet another evolution with the Internet. Some larger companies, such as IBM and Dell have already woken up to the power of using the Internet and Social networking to engage with a global audience, small businesses have been busy surviving the recession? but as the recovery gathers pace, I am sure that Business Internet Marketing will become an attractive proposition for many.

Allison Cortson uses dust to create paintings

Artist Allison Cortson, from Los Angeles, California, said "Dust is the perfect material because it is actually created by the people in the paintings. She adds "I was sitting on the couch watching dust particles float around in the light coming through the window and the idea came to me".

"I'm interested in the fact that the older we get, the more dust we create - it is made up of 70 per cent dead skin. I enjoy painting people and thought dust would be the perfect material to represent them in their own environment."

"I am pretty quick when it comes to painting, depending on the size it takes me a week or two to finish," she said. "There aren't any special tools I use, except a fine mesh strainer I bought from a cooking store to sift out the dust".

A plan to save Europe's threatened butterflies

Many of Europe's butterflies are in trouble, according to a new report, but a team of scientists is offering hope for the beleaguered insects. The team has outlined some key strategies ? some of them surprising ? for saving the continent's butterflies.

In the last 15 years alone, the numbers of 17 key European butterfly species have declined by 70 percent, according to a statement from researchers with the group Butterfly Conservation Europe.

Up to 10 percent of the butterfly species are now threatened with extinction.

Across the Atlantic, in North America, monarch butterfly numbers have also suffered.

In Europe, habitat destruction is fueling the steep losses, and the group has outlined some key "do's and don'ts" for preserving the grasslands that butterflies require to breed and feed. Their paper is published in the journal Nature Conservation.

Oddly, it appears that the decline of agriculture in Europe is bad for the butterflies.

The authors of the report say that maintaining working farms is an important activity that keeps woody shrubs from taking over the grassy meadows where butterflies typically live.

In addition, the authors say that grazing animals also help preserve key butterfly habitat.

However, they say that too much agriculture ? cutting too much grass for hay, letting animals overgraze a pasture ? can kill off the insects.

The group also recommends keeping a diverse mosaic of plants alive in key grassland areas, since different species rely on different plants, and employ a wide variety of strategies to survive.

In fact, one threatened butterfly relies on ants to stay alive, and as the ants are disappearing, so are their larger insect dependants.

Phengaris nausithous, the dusky large blue butterfly, spends the majority of its caterpillar stage holed up underground in the nests of red ants.

For this odd species, "meadows need to be cut every one to three years, or lightly grazed, leaving some patches of taller vegetation which supports the ants' nests. Intensive cutting or heavy grazing can eliminate populations," the authors wrote.

"Managing habitats in the correct way is the single most important issue affecting the survival of European butterflies," lead author Chris van Swaay, of Dutch Butterfly Conservation, said in a statement.

"We hope the advice will be taken up urgently across Europe to help save these beautiful species from extinction."

Prominent Pakistani acid victim commits suicide

(AP) ? Pakistani acid attack victim Fakhra Younus had endured more than three dozen surgeries over more than a decade to repair her severely damaged face and body when she finally decided life was no longer worth living.

The 33-year-old former dancing girl ? who was allegedly attacked by her then-husband, an ex-lawmaker and son of a political powerhouse ? jumped from the sixth floor of a building in Rome, where she had been living and receiving treatment.

Her March 17 suicide and the return of her body to Pakistan on Sunday reignited furor over the case, which received significant international attention at the time of the attack. Her death came less than a month after a Pakistani filmmaker won the country's first Oscar for a documentary about acid attack victims.

Younus' story highlights the horrible mistreatment many women face in Pakistan's conservative, male-dominated culture and is a reminder that the country's rich and powerful often appear to operate with impunity. Younus' ex-husband, Bilal Khar, was eventually acquitted, but many believe he used his connections to escape the law's grip ? a common occurrence in Pakistan.

More than 8,500 acid attacks, forced marriages and other forms of violence against women were reported in Pakistan in 2011, according to The Aurat Foundation, a women's rights organization. Because the group relied mostly on media reports, the figure is likely an undercount.

"The saddest part is that she realized that the system in Pakistan was never going to provide her with relief or remedy," Nayyar Shabana Kiyani, an activist at The Aurat Foundation, said of Younus. "She was totally disappointed that there was no justice available to her."

Younus was a teenage dancing girl working in the red light district of the southern city of Karachi when she met her future husband, the son of Ghulam Mustafa Khar, a former governor of Pakistan's largest province, Punjab. The unusual pairing was the younger Khar's third marriage. He was in his mid-30s at the time.

The couple was married for three years, but Younus eventually left him because he allegedly physically and verbally abused her. She claimed that he came to her mother's house while she was sleeping in May 2000 and poured acid all over her in the presence of her 5-year-old son from a different man.

Tehmina Durrani, Ghulam Mustafa Khar's ex-wife and his son's stepmother, became an advocate for Younus after the attack, drawing international attention to the case. She said that Younus' injuries were the worst she had ever seen on an acid attack victim.

"So many times we thought she would die in the night because her nose was melted and she couldn't breathe," said Durrani, who wrote a book about her own allegedly abusive relationship with the elder Khar. "We used to put a straw in the little bit of her mouth that was left because the rest was all melted together."

She said Younus, whose life had always been hard, became a liability to her family, for whom she was once a source of income.

"Her life was a parched stretch of hard rock on which nothing bloomed," Durrani wrote in a column in The News after Younus' suicide.

Younus' ex-husband grew up in starkly different circumstances, amid the wealth and power of the country's feudal elite, and counts Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar as a cousin.

Bilal Khar once again denied carrying out the acid attack in a TV interview following her suicide, suggesting a different man with the same name committed the crime. He claimed Younus killed herself because she didn't have enough money, not because of her horrific injuries, and criticized the media for hounding him about the issue.

"You people should be a little considerate," said Khar. "I have three daughters and when they go to school people tease them."

In February, Younus said in one of her last interviews that powerful Pakistanis brutally treat ordinary citizens and "don't know how painful they make others' lives."

"I want such people to be treated in the same way" as they treat people whose lives they ruin, she told Geo TV over the telephone from Rome.

Younus was energized when the Pakistani government enacted a new set of laws last year that explicitly criminalized acid attacks and mandated that convicted attackers would serve a minimum sentence of 14 years, said Durrani. She hoped to return someday to get justice once her health stabilized.

"She said, 'When I come back, I will reopen the case, and I'll fight myself,' and she was a fighter," Durrani said.

Durrani had to battle with both Younus' ex-husband and the government to send her to Italy, where the Italian government paid for her treatment and provided her money to live on and send her child to school. Pakistani officials argued that sending Younus to Italy would give the country a bad name, Durrani said.

Younus was happy when Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won an Oscar for her documentary about acid attack victims in February, but was worried about being forgotten since she wasn't profiled in the film, said Durrani.

Durrani said Younus' case should be a reminder that the Pakistani government needs to do much more to prevent acid attacks and other forms of violence against women, and also help the victims.

"I think this whole country should be extremely embarrassed that a foreign country took responsibility for a Pakistani citizen for 13 years because we could give her nothing, not justice, not security," said Durrani.

Food And Drink ? Basics Of Dark Chocolate Benefits

There are a number of dark chocolate benefits you can enjoy and the majority of these benefits are real and not fictional. But before going out and start to eat your Snickers it?ll pay to first consider a couple of things with respect to dark chocolate. To begin with, dark chocolate refers to a chocolate that contains at least sixty-five percent cacao. Though no doctor is going to commend that you eat dark chocolate due to its health benefits, it does however contain a fair quantity of anti-oxidants that will end up being favourable to your fitness ? provided naturally that you consume it in the right demeanour.

One of the notable dark chocolate benefits is that it contains very little of sugar and since it also contains antioxidants you can at least be assured that when you eat dark chocolate you will get rid of free radicals which are the things that cause a person to age prematurely. Another of many dark chocolate benefits that you must become mindful of is that dark chocolate provides help in bringing down the levels of bad cholesterol oxidization and it also decreases the prospects of going through blood clots.

The main reason why a person will get to enjoy dark chocolate benefits is because the dark chocolate contains flavonoids which are ketones that are usually found in the stem, leaves and seeds of diverse plants. Flavonoids for their part are a part of a grouping of anti oxidising compounds that are called polyphenols that in turn help an individual to enjoy sounder health.

Otherwise, there?s another dark chocolate benefit in that that there?s hardly any of milk in the dark chocolate mix and this suggests that the flavonoids get correctly absorbed in the body.

On the other hand there is also a downside to dark chocolates and these needs to be addressed as well. There is always a worry that by eating dark chocolates you could suffer from migraine attacks. Among the major dark chocolate benefits that?ve been identified you can include lower blood pressure, lowering levels of bad cholesterol, making ladies more keen, containing serotonin that helps to improve the mood and wards off depression and eventually, it increases production of endorphin that in turn causes someone to feel more enjoyable.

One not so obvious dark chocolate benefits is that an item such as dark chocolate fudge can also make for an excellent gift that can be given to someone you would like to get to know a bit better. Not only does it help make an inexpensive gift, but it is sure to be also well appreciated by the receiver.

It isn?t difficult to get carried away with the various dark chocolate benefits though as with each good thing it?s also mandatory to make sure that moderation be the key. It is always a good idea to ensure that you eat only as much as is good for your needs and not over indulge your sweet tooth and risk frittering away whatever benefits is there to be had.

Egypt parliament names constitution panel

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian parliamentarians on Saturday are casting ballots to select a 100-member panel that will draft the country's new constitution, amid deep polarization between liberals and Islamists over the process.

Secularists and liberals fear that parliament's Islamist majority will pack the panel with their supporters and ignore minority concerns.

These fears have spiked over the last week after parliament decided to allocate 50 percent of the seats in the panel to its own members, and when a leading Islamist deputy said that the country's most prominent democracy advocate, Mohamed ElBaradei, would likely not be included.

Egypt's ruling council issued last year an interim constitution that gives elected members of the parliament's two houses the right to select those who will draft the new constitution that will define Egypt's future identity. The old 1971 constitution was suspended after the uprising that toppled longtime president Hosni Mubarak.

After the panel writes the constitution, it will be put to a vote in a national referendum. However the ruling military council left the guidelines for the process vague enough to spark a hot debate between liberals and Islamists on who should be included.

Egypt's Islamist groups, including both the Muslim Brotherhood and the ultraconservative Salafis, between them make up nearly three-quarters of parliament after sweeping the vote in the first post-revolution elections that began in November.

They passed a vote last week to appoint 50 of the panel members from inside the parliament, while the rest come from outside.

Liberals, among whom are youth groups and secular parties that led the uprising but performed poorly in elections, say that a permanent constitution should not be written solely by the victors in a single election.

They argue that the constitutional process should include a wide range of members from the country's different ideological trends, professional syndicates and unions, women, and members of the Christian minority. They say that parliament's decision to have its members dominate the process violates earlier Brotherhood pledges to draft the charter by "consensus" and fear it represents a capitulation to the Salafis.

The new constitution is expected to curb presidential powers and give parliament more authority, a drastic change to Egypt's political system. Although the changes are intended to prevent the abuses of power associated with Mubarak, liberals fear that empowering the legislature will also empower the Islamists who have a majority there.

Another key concern is the role of Islamic Shariah law, which is subject to a wide variety of interpretation.

The old 1971 constitution says Shariah is the "main source of legislation," but many in the hardline Salafi bloc that makes up nearly a quarter of parliament's members want specific mention of statutes based on strict interpretations of Shariah: mandating segregation of the sexes, banning banks from charging interest and punishing theft by cutting off thieves' hands.

Another divisive issue is the role of the military and the future of the country's military rulers. The ruling generals want assurances they won't lose their political clout and that parliament will have no say over the military's budget.

Anti-military youth activists fear the Islamists will give the military what they want, in exchange for the generals allowing them carte blanche in the constitution writing.

"We are before a historic mission," said parliamentary speaker Saad el-Katatni, a member of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood. "There will be no exclusions for anybody," he said, adding that the constitution should not be written by "the majority," but instead by "consensus and partnership."

That pledge however has been called into question by the exclusion of ElBaradei, whom Brotherhood parliamentarian Mohammed el-Beltagi said on his Facebook page Friday would normally be included "only if he didn't oppose the current road map" for drafting the document.

ElBaradei had criticized the parliament ? the product of the first open elections after decades of dictatorship ? as not fully representative, and the process of drafting the constitution as rushed. He posted in a Tweet that the charter "is not a fast food meal."

Parliamentarians also dropped an earlier proposal to give a quota of 25 seats to representatives of prominent Egyptian institutions, which prompted a young liberal-leaning lawmaker Mustafa al-Nagar to boycott the voting process.

He posted on his Twitter account that he would boycot the selection of the constitutional panel because it is "an exclusion to all Egyptians."

Liberal judges and activists have filed legal challenges to the 50/50 panel makeup.

With drums and chants, youth activists rallied outside parliament against Islamists and military for what they see as sabotaging the revolution.

"No Salafis, no Brotherhood. The constitution is for all Egyptians," they chanted. "We said the military hijacked the revolution ... They (Islamists) said no, the military are sweet like sugar."

Kim Kardashian Flour Tosser Could Face Charges

The woman who was caught on film in the Kim Kardashian flour tossing incident could be facing charges, according to recent reports. The video went viral late this week of a woman approaching Kim from behind on the red carpet, then literally dumping a box of flour over the back of her head and body. The woman can then be seen scampering back down the red carpet and into a nearby hallway.   The look of frustration on Kim?s face is clear, and I think you can even hear her cursing about it over all of the rolling cameras. She is then whisked into a nearby elevator with for some reason, doesn?t want to close. Her security team and friends sit there helpless as the paparrazzi swarm the elevator hoping to block them from taking pictures.   At first Kim acted like she didn?t care, and even said that she wouldn?t be ?pursuing the matter.? Now all of a sudden, we are learning that she wants to make sure that the woman who did it ?does not get away with it.?   I am sort of on the fence with this one. I agree that the woman should have some [...]

Book: The Inside Story of How Bell Labs Invented the World We Live in Today

In the decades before the country's best minds began migrating west to California's Silicon Valley, many of them came east to New Jersey, where they worked in enormous brick-and-glass buildings located on grassy campuses where deer would graze at twilight. In a time before Google, Bell Labs sufficed as the country's intellectual utopia. It was where the future, which is what we now happen to call the present, was conceived and designed.

The transistor, invented at Bell Labs in 1947, is the building block of all digital products; millions of them reside on the chips that power our phones and computers. After that came the first silicon solar cell; the theory for the laser; digital communications; communications satellites; the first cellular telephone networks; and the development of Unix and C, which form the basis for today's most essential computer operating systems and languages.

(MORE: Google Takes Another Experimental Step Toward Delivering TV)

At its peak size, Bell Labs employed about 25,000 people, including some 3,300 PhDs. Its ranks included the world's most brilliant (and eccentric) men and women. For a long stretch of the twentieth century, Bell Labs was the most innovative scientific organization in the world. It was arguably among the world's most important commercial organizations as well, with countless entrepreneurs building their businesses upon the Labs' foundational inventions, which were often shared for a modest fee.

Strictly speaking, creating new technology for American consumers was not Bell Labs' intended function. Rather, its role was to support the research and development efforts of the country's then-monopolistic telephone company, American Telephone & Telegraph (AT&T), which was seeking to create and maintain a system -- the word "network" wasn't yet common -- that could connect any person on the globe to any other at any time.

AT&T's dream of "universal" connectivity was set down in the early 1900s. Yet it took more than three-quarters of a century for this idea to mature, thanks largely to the work done at Bell Labs, into a fantastically complex web of copper cables and microwave links and glass fibers that tied together not only all of the planet's voices but its images and data, too. In those evolutionary years, the world's business, as well as its technological progress, began to depend on information and the conduits through which it moved. Indeed, the phrase used to describe the era that the Bell scientists helped create, the age of information, suggested we had left the material world behind. A new commodity -- weightless, invisible, fleet as light itself -- defined the times.

Should we care how this new age began? Practically speaking, if our cell phones ring and our computer networks function, we don't need to recall how two men sat together in a suburban New Jersey laboratory during the autumn of 1947 and invented the transistor. Nor do we need to know that in 1971 a team of Bell Labs engineers drove around Philadelphia night after night in a trailer home stocked with sensitive radio equipment, trying to set up the first working cell phone system.

In other words, we don't have to understand the details of the twentieth century in order to live in the twenty-first. And there's a good reason we don't have to. The history of technology tends to remain stuffed in attic trunks and the minds of aging scientists. Those breakthrough products of past decades -- the earliest silicon solar cells, for instance, which now reside in a filing cabinet in a forlorn warehouse in central New Jersey -- seem barely functional by today's standards. So rapid is the evolutionary development of technological ideas that the journey from state-of-the-art to artifact can occur in a mere few years.

Still, good arguments urge us to contemplate scientific history. While our engineering prowess has advanced a great deal over the past sixty years, the principles of innovation largely have not. Indeed, the techniques forged at Bell Labs -- a knack for apprehending a vexing problem, gathering ideas that might lead to a solution, and then pushing toward the development of a product that could be deployed on a massive scale -- are still worth considering today, where we confront a host of challenges (information overloads and climate change, among others) that seem very nearly intractable.

Some observers have taken to calling them "wicked problems." As it happens, Bell Labs' past offers the example of one seemingly wicked problem that was overcome by an innovative effort that rivals the Apollo program and Manhattan Project in size, scope, and expense. That was to connect all of us, and all of our new machines, together.

In workplaces with a high percentage of women in a management position more individualized employee feedback is carried out, more democratic decisions are adopted and more interpersonal channels of communications are established, according to a study by the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

This research study aims to study up to what point administrative practices of persons in the workplace are different in management teams that have a higher proportion of women. "In line with known gender differences in individual leadership, we find that in workplaces with more women managers more individualized employee feedback is carried out," asserted the study's author, Eduardo Melero, Professor in the UC3M Department of Business Administration, who has published the results of this research in the Journal of Business Research. "Likewise we can see evidence, although weaker, that in these workplaces decisions are made more democratically and more interpersonal channels of communications are established," he added.

According to the researchers, these differences at the individual level between men and women leaders tend to reflect the distinct behaviour that the two genders have in general in society and can have applications in the working world. If a company wants to apply practices aimed at increased direct contact between management and employees, it could be easier with more women higher up in the organizational ranks. "Women managers seem to be more inclined to use these types of practices, individually, as well as promoting them among the rest of the management team," Professor Eduardo Melero explained. "And as such, a management team with more women could be more effective (keeping all other factors constant) when implementing them," he concluded.

In order to carry out this study, data has been used from the Workplace Employment Relationships Survey, a survey of workplaces in the United Kingdom. "While using this survey in another research project, I suddenly realized that all the information that it contained, if employed well, could be used to delve further into a subject which psychologists had studied extensively but always at the individual level," Melero, an economist and professor of Business Administration, explained.

To arrive at these conclusions, it is not enough to determine if there is a strong correlation between the percentage of women in management and the type of practices carried out, since there are a large number of factors that could be at the origin of this correlation, such as characteristics of the company, the sector, or the personnel. To take this into account, Melero carried out a regression analysis in which he controlled for the effect of a number of factors at these three levels (company, sector, and personnel) when analyzing the relation between the percentage of women in management and the type of practices applied.
