This Week’s Apple Rumors, Ranked From Dumbest to Most Plausible

Production of the iPhone 5c may be slowing, according to a report out of China. Photo: Alex Washburn/WIRED

Each week, there are dozens of Apple rumors, reports, and patent filings that hint at what’s coming out of Cupertino next. Some are legit, but most are totally bogus. We parse the week’s rumors for you, ranking them in order from “utterly ridiculous” to “duh, of course.” First up…

DON’T COUNT ON IT: Apple iWatch Will Be a Home Automation Portal
Forget about access to texts and tweets, snapping photos, and all the other wrist-based activities associated with smartwatches. Apple’s ambitions go far beyond such mundane tasks, Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Brian White says. He expects the rumored Apple iWatch will let you control things like home lighting and temperature, music and entertainment, energy use, and security. It would be a “multi-purpose gateway” into the home. White reportedly talked with Apple’s Taiwanese and mainland China suppliers to get this insight. While this is certainly a possibility (and it sounds good to us), information about Apple’s iWatch is still pretty suspect this early in the game.

ASK AGAIN LATER: iPhone 5c Production Getting Halved
Chinese site C Technology reports that Apple is slicing its iPhone 5c production from 300,000 units to 150,000 units per day. The drop could be due to wide availability, weak demand, or just a part of the iPhone 5c’s production plan. Whatever the reason, it doesn’t mean there’s a shortage of iPhone 5c’s at hand. The gold iPhone 5s on the other hand…

ASK AGAIN LATER: A 12-Inch Retina Display MacBook Air for 2014?
Ever since Apple debuted the Retina Display MacBook Pro in mid 2012, OS X users have been wondering: How long until we get a Retina MacBook Air? According to DisplaySearch, we’ll get one sometime in 2014. Based on DisplaySearch’s supply chain research, they think Apple is going to “revamp nearly all of the displays in its products over the next year.” A report out of Korea last week also suggested Apple would be making big changes to its display lineup in 2014. While it’s possible Apple could debut a Retina iPad next year, I question the 12-inch size in this report — why would Apple not stick with the current 13-inch size for a Retina display MacBook Air?

WITHOUT A DOUBT: Apple to Hold iPad Event October 22
Looks like Apple’s next media event will take place October 22, according to AllThingsD (and past Apple example). Previously, the rumor was October 15, but seeing as no invites went out this week, that’s definitely not happening. If Apple follows the same timing between its September and October events as it did last year, October 22 would be the date.

WITHOUT A DOUBT: Apple’s 5th-Gen iPad Gets the Space Gray Treatment
If this isn’t the next iPad decked out in space gray, then I’ll be darned. A whole mess of images come to us via Sonny Dickson, who’s been accurately leaking photos of other Apple products like the iPhone 5c this year. As we’ve seen from other leaked photos, the new iPad will be much slimmer and look more iPad mini-like. Between the number of leaked images, the proximity to Apple’s next event, and the way Apple tends to style its product lineups, I would expect the next iPad to look like the photos and signs suggest.

Andy Samberg's Fox role inspired by 'The Wire'

Actor Andy Samberg at the Television Critics Association summer press tour for his new Fox comedy "Brooklyn Nine-Nine."

Andy Samberg's family knew he was funny when he was an infant and relieved himself in a bathtub, then laughed hysterically about it.?

"My sister started squealing and laughing and I started laughing hysterically," Samberg said told reporters at the Television Critics Association's press tour Thursday for his first post-"Saturday Night Live" TV show, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," which premieres on Fox on Sept. 17. "And my mom said, 'That?s when we knew.' I like to think I haven?t matured in my comedy at all since then."

Samberg, 34, plays a smug and effective detective in the workplace comedy set in a Brooklyn police precinct. Although his character, Jake Peralta, can be goofy, he's also the best detective in the house.

"He's like McNulty from 'The Wire,' except instead of drinking problems and philandering he's being a jackass," Samberg said. "I think it's important for the show to work, because otherwise why do you care? If he?s actually good at it, you can forgive him from being a jackass."

"He's comedy McNulty!" added executive producer Dan Goor.

Samberg said he wasn't looking to become a series regular on a television show. But when "Parks and Recreation" executive producers Goor and Michael Schur, who created "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" in a similar documentary-style format, approached him, he couldn't resist.

"I was not looking to do a TV series at all," Samberg said. "But I?m a huge fan of 'Parks' and I?ve seen what these guys have done with (Amy Poehler), who is basically my hero and idol ... it was too good to pass up."

The diverse cast includes Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Chelsea Peretti and Stephanie Beatriz, who plays a detective and is excited to be one of two Latinas on the show.

"It never happens that you look over and there?s another Latina actress on the same show with you and we?re not doing accents," Beatriz said. "Nobody?s doing anything spicy, you know? It?s amazing, it?s incredible and it does reflect this room and the United States."

Mayor believes stadium is good investment

Topics:? debt, mackay regional council, money, nrl, virgin australia stadium

Mayor Deirdre Comerford said the stadium is a great asset.
Mayor Deirdre Comerford said the stadium is a great asset.

RATEPAYERS have paid off more than $600,000 of debt, which was left in the hands of the Mackay Regional Council after it took over operations of the Virgin Australia Stadium.

Mayor Deirdre Comerford said it wasn't "pleasant" to have to tell the community the extent of the $635,000 bill, which includes paying off outstanding power bills, wages and the cost of hosting NRL matches.

But she is confident the $11.3?million stadium is a solid investment for the community.

The public was invited to attend yesterday morning's press conference, and councillors showed a united front, with many of them watching the mayor address the media pack. Council is in the process of developing a business plan to manage the cost of the stadium, she said.

"The key is ... that we will develop a business plan, so we can ensure for our community that we can run this as effectively, and cost effectively as we can," Cr Comerford said.

The current Virgin Australia Stadium manager, Julie Anderson, will finish up in early September, and a senior officer at the MECC will take charge. At the moment there is a $200,000 line in the council budget allocated to fund the running of the stadium.

The Bulldogs versus Knights NRL match, which was played only a month after council was in control of the stadium, ran at an $185,000 loss.

But $450,000 of debts were left to council, when they took over operations.

"There were power bills outstanding for about $70,000 and it was also down to maintenance and cleaning bills, fire alarm maintenance ... top dressing the field," she said.

"So those figures are real bills owed to real businesses in Mackay. And one can say ... council was doing the right thing by many local businesses in our community."

Reader poll

Do you believe the stadium is a good investment?

POSSIBILITY OF NO MORE NRL GAMES

THE stadium won't host another NRL game if councillors know it will run at a loss.

That's the opinion of Mayor Deirdre Comerford.

She said they would have to know if events like that would, at the least, "break even", to get a green light by councillors.

Bulldogs? Ben Barba evades a tackle from Knights? Jarrod Mullen during the NRL match held at Virgin Australia Stadium last month.

"But it is clear to say, we can still see the value of having an NRL match, for a variety of reasons," she said.

Cr Comerford has been in meetings with NRL officials to discuss the stadium's best bet at hosting an event.

The previous match was a huge learning curve, and things would change if another game of that scale was to be held at the stadium.

"There are better ways to do things for the future," she said.

However, the Virgin Australia Stadium has key events coming up.

Mackay District Rugby League has secured a deal to host their grand final match later this year.

And on September 21 the stadium will be filled with big hats and boots when the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) bring their show to Mackay.

Cr Comerford said, if the opportunity to host another musical spectacular, like March's KISS concert, came about, council would absolutely look into it.

?

CUTTERS HOPE TO STAY

THE Mackay Cutters have called the Virgin Australia Stadium home for two years, and executive officer Glenn Ottaway hopes it will stay that way.

Mayor Deirdre Comerford said the agreement allowing the Cutters to stay on board at the stadium would be looked at in council's development plan.

"Certainly they are currently tenants at the stadium and they will be part of the business plan going forward, so they will need to pay their way," she said.

Mr Ottaway said increased cost on the Cutters would be a huge burden on the club.

"We are a not-for-profit organisation, everything we earn is from the support of sponsors and the community, but 100% of what we make goes back into the club," he said.

Cr Comerford said the Cutters were unique, in comparison to other clubs, as they didn't have a leagues club with poker machines pooling in money for them.

Mr Ottaway said Cutters and council officials had been meeting regularly, even daily, to discuss operations at the stadium. He said he was promised by council they would ride out the rest of the season, and was confident they could make an agreement with council.

Can Microsoft Rebound From Surface Flop?

Tablet Buying Demystified: 10 Tips

Like an overmatched but determined boxer, Microsoft's Surface line has been absorbing abuse for months -- and on Tuesday, the devices took a punch straight to the chin.

In its annual 10-K report to the SEC, Microsoft revealed that its Surface products are hemorrhaging even more cash than previously thought. CEO Steve Ballmer's reorganized company now faces a tough question: Can it increase adoption before its Surface line -- particularly the RT model -- is down for the count?

Tuesday's report added new dimension to the scope of Microsoft's problem. The company evidently took in only $853 million in Surface-related revenue in all of its fiscal 2013, which started in July 2012. That's almost $50 million less than the $900 million write-down Microsoft recently took to accommodate a $150 Surface RT price reduction.

What's more, Microsoft increased its marketing budget by almost $1 billion during the reported period, mostly to advertise Windows 8 and the Surface products. Because Windows 8 and the Surface RT didn't hit the market until late October, Microsoft's tablet revenue represents only two-thirds of the fiscal year, which means that in only 8 months, the company spent a gargantuan amount of money attempting -- and failing -- to attract consumers.

[ Windows 8.1 Enterprise includes a lot to assuage business users, but plenty of questions remain. Read Microsoft Releases Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview. ]

To be fair, there are only a few tech companies that can casually absorb billion-dollar losses, and Microsoft is one of them. Still, the situation is bleak for several reasons.

The $853 million in revenue includes both the Surface Pro and the Surface RT. In May, IDC estimated that Microsoft sold about 900,000 combined Surface units in the first three months of the year. This is a relatively paltry sum (IDC estimated that Apple sold 19 million iPads over the same period), but some had speculated that the Surface Pro, which arrived months after the RT model and was initially subject to stock shortages, was selling better than its sibling. Microsoft's disclosure suggests that both tablets have struggled, however.

The SEC report is also just the latest in a two-week barrage of negative Windows RT news. Other examples include Steve Ballmer's uncharacteristically direct admission that the device has underperformed, as well as Asus's decision to abandon development of Win RT products. Asus chairman Jonny Shih told All Things D that the OS is "not very promising," and virtually all of Microsoft's OEM partners have now dumped their Windows RT plans.

With the PC market in disarray and Windows 8 still struggling, Microsoft's Surface woes are only one facet of the company's larger challenges. The company hopes to improve sales of both PCs and tablets with Windows 8.1, however, and Ballmer confirmed in July that new Surface models are in development. The OS update should help Windows 8 overall -- but the question still remains: How is Microsoft going to reverse the Surface's dreadful performance?

Instagram reportedly blocking images uploaded through some third-party apps

Hipstamatic Oggl app users might want to rethink those subscriptions. Select Windows Phone 8 imaging apps, such as Instance, may no longer be able to upload images to Instagram's photo sharing service. According to a spokesperson's comment published on The Verge, the site has updated its API, restricting access to third-party apps in an effort to "fight spam to help prevent future attacks and increase security." Images apparently still pop up on the platform, but are deleted seconds later. For now, it appears that the only way to share images on Instagram is to capture them directly within the app, or through a supported service like Hipstamatic Oggl, leaving some WP8 and BlackBerry users out in the cold. Let's hope this unwelcome change means additional OS support is on the way.

Update: We spoke to an Instagram representative, who provided the same ambiguous response we've already seen reported. "We recently made an update to the systems that we use to fight spam to help prevent future attacks and increase security. As part of this, applications accessing Instagram against the terms of our API may also be affected. This update does not specifically target any particular app or platform." Unfortunately, it's not clear which apps are affected, including Hipstamatic Oggl, but we're currently testing several third-party offerings and we'll share our results shortly.

Update 2: We've managed to test Hipstamatic Oggl, and the app was successfully able to upload an image to Instagram. It appears that this new restriction is limited to apps that aren't accessing the service in line with API requirements.

Clintons Eager To See Anthony Weiner Exit New York Mayor Race

By Alan with comments July 29, 2013 18:52

Patience is growing thin in Clintonland.

Bill and Hillary Clinton increasingly see Anthony Weiner?s mayoral campaign as an embarrassment and potential liability, and are signaling through associates that they are eager to see him exit the race, several former Clinton aides and advisers told ABC News.

One Clinton associate said the Clintons are ?bristling at the comparisons? between Weiner and Bill Clinton, and between Hillary Clinton and Weiner?s wife, Huma Abedin.

The pressure they are applying on him to exit the race has been coming from those outside the Clinton inner circle, at least for now, and there are no immediate plans for that to change.

US doesn't plan to make decision on Egypt coup: official

Mohamed Abd El Ghany / Reuters

The U.S. government will not determine formally whether Egypt's ousted President Mohammed Morsi was removed from power in a coup on July 3 because "it is not in our national interest to make such a determination," a?senior administration official said Thursday.?

"Egypt serves as a stabilizing pillar of regional peace and security and the United States has a national security interest in a stable and successful democratic transition in Egypt," the senior official said.?

The United States provides $1.5 billion in military and economic aid to Egypt each year. If it were determined a coup took place, law stipulates the assistance should stop. ?

"We believe that the continued provision of assistance to Egypt, consistent with our law, is important to our goal of advancing a responsible transition to democratic governance and is consistent with our national security interests. The law does not require us to make a formal determination as to whether a coup took place, and it is not in our national interest to make such a determination," the official said.?

Deputy Secretary Bill Burns briefed the leadership of both the Senate and the House on Egypt Thursday evening. The official said the administration will continue to "work with the Congress to determine how best to continue assistance to Egypt in a manner that encourages Egypt's interim government to quickly and responsibly transition back to a stable, democratic, civilian-led and inclusive government that addresses the needs and respects the rights and freedoms of all its people."

Hussein Malla / AP

Days of massive protests and a military ultimatum forced the country's first democratically elected president from office.

Meanwhile, Egypt?s military warned that it was prepared to use force to counter what it called "violence and black terrorism" as protests over Morsi's ouster continued.

A statement headlined ?the last chance? said the commander of the armed forces was going to change strategy in order to guarantee the ?security and stability of this great nation.?

"We confirm that the Egyptian Armed Forces is the army for all the people and of all the people and would never raise its weapons in the face of its people, but [it would raise its weapons] in the face of violence and black terrorism [that] has no religion or country," the statement added.

It said the new approach would begin after Friday, when rival protests in support of the military and of Morsi are due to be held.

The statement gave protesters 48 hours to "retreat" and "get in line with the rest of the nation" so the country can prepare for the future.

Close to 200 people have died in violence triggered by Morsi's ouster by the military on July 3, Reuters reported.

Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawy, head of the interim cabinet, said there were escalating attacks on government institutions by increasingly well-armed protesters.

"The presence of weapons, intimidation, fear - this causes concern, especially when there are calls for many to come out tomorrow from different sides," he told a news conference, according to Reuters.

Farid Ismail, a senior politician with Morsi?s Muslim Brotherhood movement, accused the security services of readying militias to attack Morsi supporters.

He claimed that Army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was trying to drag Egypt into civil war.

"His definition of terrorism is anyone who disagrees with him," Ismail told Reuters. "We are moving forward in complete peacefulness, going forward to confront this coup."

In a speech on Wednesday, Sisi pointed to the deepening confrontation between the Brotherhood and the military establishment, which has reasserted its role at the heart of government even as it says it aims to steer clear of politics.

The interim government installed after Morsi was ousted plans to introduce a new constitution, then hold fresh elections.

The Brotherhood accuses the army of ejecting a democratically elected leader in a long-planned coup, while its opponents say the army responded to the will of the people after days of mass protests against Morsi.?

Reuters contributed to this report.

Scientists implant false memories in mice

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have found a way to fool mice into remembering an electric shock where none actually existed.

By Joel Shurkin,?Inside Science News Service contributor / July 26, 2013

Researchers have created fake memories in mice indistinguishable from the mice's true recollections, an accomplishment that has bearings on much confidence we should have in our own memories.

NYU/AP

?Memory is deceptive because it is colored by today?s events,? said Albert Einstein. ?It is also deceptive because it is frequently wrong, sometimes dangerously so.

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed the ability to implant mice with false memories. The memories can be easily induced and are just as strong as real memories, physiological proof of something psychologists and lawyers have known for years.

The findings are a serious matter. According to the?Innocence Project, eyewitness testimony played a role in 75 percent of guilty verdicts eventually overturned by DNA testing after people spent years in prison. Some prisoners may even have been executed due to false eyewitness testimony. It was not because the witnesses were lying. They were just wrong, said Susumu Tonegawa, a molecular biologist and the lead author in the MIT study.

In the longest criminal trial in American history, the McMartin family, who operated a preschool in California, was charged with multiple incidents of child abuse. After seven years and $15 million in prosecution expenses, some charges were dropped and the defendants were acquitted of others when it became clear some of the accusations were based on false memories, some possibly planted by childrens? therapists.

There is now a False Memory Syndrome in scientific literature and a False Memory Syndrome Foundation.

Last year, Tonegawa and his team published a study in?Nature?showing how false memories could be implanted in mice. They first put mice in a chamber -- the scientists called it the Red Room -- and let the animals roam around exploring so they could build up a contextual memory of it.

After a while, they gave the mice mild electric shocks to their feet and a blue light flashed in their brains delivered by a fiber-optic cable, implanting the memory that the Red Room was a dangerous place.

The next day researchers put the mice in an entirely different chamber ? the Black Room ? and let them explore peacefully. The mice were not afraid until the light flashed. The mice froze again although they were not in the chamber where they had received a shock. Why?

Memory is largely in the hippocampus, Tonegawa said, in a section called the dentate gyrus. Tonegawa, Steve Ramirez, a graduate student, and their colleagues identified the neurons there that were associated with experiential learning.

Alabama reports NCAA secondary violations

Published: Thursday, July 25, 2013 at 8:07 p.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, July 25, 2013 at 8:07 p.m.

The report, which was posted Thursday on the UA's athletic compliance website, outlines 31 violations in 11 sports from July 1, 2012, to the end of June this year, with seven violations in football and eight in swimming and diving.

Pannunzio, who is identified only as a "staff member" in UA's violations listing, was also required to attend an NCAA rules seminar and prohibited from recruiting communications for 90 days for providing "impermissible benefits to a prospect and his family" and introducing the prospect to a booster while Pannunzio was at Miami.

According to a 2011 report by Yahoo, Pannunzio facilitated a meeting between recruit Matt Patchen and booster Nevin Shapiro at Shapiro's Miami Beach mansion. The report also cites phone records that show 422 text messages between Pannunzio and Shapiro between 2006 and 2010, when Pannunzio was tight ends coach and special teams coordinator for the Hurricanes.

Alabama did not independently investigate the Yahoo allegations against Pannunzio, The Tuscaloosa News has learned. The salary freeze, lack of contract extension, rules education and prohibition against recruiting contact were levied based on the allegations in the Yahoo report. Pannunzio, who has a $170,000 annual salary, was not named in the NCAA's official Notice of Allegations against Miami.

Yahoo also reported that Jeff Stoutland, Alabama's offensive line coach for the past two seasons, was present at the meeting between Patchen and Shaprio. Stoutland, Miami's offensive line coach from 2007-10, took a job with the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League after last season.

One violation involved a swimming team assistant coach posting bond for a swimmer who had been arrested. The coach was ultimately fired over the offense, The Tuscaloosa News has learned.

Other secondary football violations were:

* A player's name was involved in promoting his start-up business. The player was declared ineligible and reinstated.

* A coach exceeded the permissible number of phone calls within a week to a prospect. The coach received a letter of admonishment and was restricted from calling prospects for two weeks.

* A prospect was mailed a recruiting letter prior to the permissible date. UA restricted itself from sending recruiting material to the prospect for 60 days.

* The coaching staff exceeded the permissible number of off-campus contacts with a recruit. The coaches involved were held out of the spring evaluation period for a week and UA reduced its number of recruiting person days in the spring from 168 to 162.

* A first-year junior college player was allowed an unofficial visit. Alabama dropped recruiting activity with the prospect.

* Some football players received impermissible meals. They were declared ineligible and reinstated after donating the value of the meals to charity.

Alabama's track and rowing teams each had three secondary violations. Gymnastics, women's basketball and men's basketball each had two. Cross country, men's golf, volleyball and softball had one violation each. Eight of the violations involved text messages or Twitter, and several others were for sending emails to recruits at impermissible times.

Slumping Federer loses to Brands at Swiss Open

GSTAAD, Switzerland (AP) ? His game inconsistent and his new racket not offering much help, Roger Federer lost yet again to a player way down in the rankings.

The Swiss star fell 6-3, 6-4 to Germany's Daniel Brands in the second round of the Swiss Open on Thursday, the third straight tournament in which he made a startling exit.

Playing on clay and before home fans, Federer was troubled by the serve and big forehand of his 55th-ranked opponent.

"I wasn't consistent enough in the end," said Federer, who failed on five break-point chances. "He was serving well and I couldn't do enough with my return."

Federer's other losses in the past month were to No. 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky at Wimbledon and No. 114 Federico Delbonis at Hamburg, Germany.

The top-seeded Swiss is now ranked No. 5, his lowest in a decade since he started his run of 17 Grand Slam singles titles at Wimbledon in 2003.

Federer saved a first match point by serving an ace when trailing 5-3, and a second in the next game with a forehand winner. Brands, who took a set off Federer in a second-round loss at Hamburg, then ended the 65-minute match with a service winner in the thin mountain air.

"For sure the altitude has helped me," Brands said. "I served well and put pressure on him from the very beginning."

The 31-year-old Federer was returning to Gstaad for the first time since he won the title in 2004 and where he debuted on the ATP Tour in 1998 as a 17-year-old ranked No. 702.

Federer rarely loses an opening match. This defeat ranks alongside that of his round-of-64 exit in straight sets at Indian Wells, Calif., in March 2007 to Guillermo Canas of Argentina, then ranked No. 60.

Federer was hoping to tune his game in Gstaad and Hamburg after his second-round exit at Wimbledon. After a three-week break, he returned in Hamburg, testing his new racket yet citing back pains that limited his movement. He lost there in the semifinals.

"I'm happy that I was able to play because I've had problems for some time now, already in Hamburg," Federer said. "But it didn't get worse during today's match."

Brands broke Federer to lead 4-2 in the opening set when he put away an overhead at the net. But the 26-year-old German closed the first set with two aces, among his 11 for the match. Federer immediately lost serve in the second set by netting a backhand volley and saved three break-point chances to avoid trailing 3-0.

Federer is to return next month at the Montreal Masters and then defend his Cincinnati Masters title before the U.S. Open begins Aug. 26.

Two other seeded players were ousted in the second round: Third-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia lost to Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-2, 6-2; and eighth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain retired with a back injury against Victor Hanescu of Romania while trailing 7-6 (2), 3-2.

Also, Marcel Granollers of Spain defeated Federico Delbonis of Argentina 6-2, 7-5.

Mustangs trample Northeast for state baseball berth

SOLON ? The dream became a reality.

Now, the Mount Vernon Mustangs can replace those visions of reaching the state tournament with ones of hoisting a trophy.

Mount Vernon qualified for the state tournament for the first time since 1999, beating Northeast, 10-0, in six innings of an Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 2A substate baseball final last night at Spartan Field.

Mount Vernon (26-14) earned the fourth seed and faces Roland-Story (27-13) in a state quarterfinal.

?That?s half of our dream. The other half is winning state,? Mustangs senior C.J. Eldred said. ?Right now, we have to enjoy tonight. It?s huge.?

The victory was sweet after falling short a year ago, according to junior Noah Dahlstrom. The Mustangs wanted to accomplish the feat last season, but were confident they could claim the fourth state berth in school history this time.

?It?s redemption,? Junior Noah Dahlstrom said. ?We just got out here and got it done.?

Mount Vernon had battled injuries and issues during the regular season. The team showed its resolve, piecing things together with a focus on playing its best late. Mount Vernon Coach Jeremy Elliott said they were solid last night and district wins over West Branch and Iowa City Regina.

?You deal with a lot of adversity and you try to figure out how to get through it and better for the postseason,? Mustangs Coach Jeremy Elliott said. ?The boys stuck to the plan and did a great job when it matters.?

The Mustangs balanced offense, received hits from all but two starters and all but one reached base. Mount Vernon proved it could score in bunches, breaking the game wide open with a five-run second.

Jake Pisarik ignited the Mustangs with a one-out single, Spenser Drahos walked and Luke Hansen?s base hit scored Pisarik. Dahlstrom pushed a squeeze bunt past the pitcher for a hit that scored Drahos. Trey Ryan, who was 1-for-2 with two walks, added an RBI double and Eldred had a run-scoring single to give Mount Vernon a 6-0 lead.

?It seems like with this team if we get one it kind of snowballs in a good way,? Eldred said. ?Everybody starts seeing and hitting the ball hard. You hit the ball hard good things happen.?

Mount Vernon put four straight guys on base in the sixth to close out the shortened win. Hansen and Dahlstrom had consecutive singles. Dahlstrom?s second hit drove in Drahos and he scored the final run on Connor Welch?s sacrifice-fly to left.

?When we get started early, before we get a few outs, everybody feeds off that,? Dahlstrom said. ?It gets the courage up and we know we can.?

The Mustangs manufactured an important early run, recording just one official at-bat in the first. Ryan led off with a walk and Eldred?s sac bunt moved him in scoring position. Ryan stole third and scored on Marquis Dew?s sacrifice fly.

?It?s a big deal to get them put down and get us going,? Elliott said. ?It?s important to get runs early so our at-bats are relaxed a little bit and we were able to do some good things at the plate.?

They reversed a trend of not getting the key hit and being tense at the plate.

?We knew coming in this was going to be the game our bats were going to explode,? Eldred said. ?We did it.?

Mount Vernon freshman Adam Kettelson threw a gem, allowing only three hits. Northeast (24-9) managed to get only one runner to second, but came no closer to scoring.

?He did a fantastic job,? Elliott said. ?He?s a fearless freshman. He just wants the ball in his hand all the time.?

Davenport Assumption ended the season for a different Wamac team. The Knights dropped West Delaware, 7-6, in a 3A district final in the opener.

The Knights were powered by a five-run third inning, taking a 6-3 lead. Assumption?s Cayton Wallace had one of two RBI doubles to highlight the rally after the Hawks scored a run in the top of the inning.

The inning was pivotal.

?I thought we were poised to put up a crooked number and they got out of it,? West Delaware Coach Mike Morrison said. ?We gave up three unearned runs. You have to give Assumption credit. We gave them an opportunity and they swing the bat and strung hits together.?

West Delaware (22-15) chipped away, scoring twice in the final inning and placing the tying run on second with two outs. Andrew Quested came in for relief and struck out the final batter for Assumption (22-15).

Morrison said the Hawks don?t have a potent offense. He said he thought the?six-run and?eight-hit performance was admirable.

?I was proud of how we responded and fought all the way to the end,? Morrison said. ?We were one or two swings of the bat away from tying or winning.?

The loss was tough for Morrison, who coached his last game. After 534 career wins, he reached the district final 21 times, but won eight. Morrison will assume?his new role as the school?s?Athletics Director.

?It certainly is (tough),? Morrison said about the conclusion of his baseball coaching endeavors.

Morrison added, ?We held no expectations but to play as well as we could every night and see what happens.

?It was a fantastic effort. They were gutsy.?
