Cicadas now emerging on Staten Island

Cicadas of the Brood II population are now making their debut in New York City, for the first time in 17 years.

Historically, large numbers of these periodical cicadas have spent their short but dramatic adulthoods in the borough, but they might be harder to spot elsewhere in New York City.

The noisy creatures started emerging by the hundreds last week in certain parts of Staten Island, said Edward Johnson, director of science at the Staten Island Museum. But the insects are not likely to come out in droves in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan, Johnson added.

"They don't fly very far as adults, and so are unlikely to colonize other boroughs from Staten Island," he said. [Ewww! 6 Crazy Facts About Cicadas]

Brood II is one of the distinct cicada populations that only matures every 13 or 17 years. Known as?periodical cicadas, they belong to the genus?Magicicada, and they can be found only in the eastern half of North America. Brood II's range extends from Georgia to Connecticut and it began its emergence earlier this month.

Their loud mating calls and carpet of corpses may come as a nuisance to some, but each emergence is exciting for entomologists studying the mysterious, long-lived insects ? they spend most of their lives in an immature stage. The cicadas coming out of the ground now were born in 1996, meaning they're the first Brood II generation to be greeted by Twitter and Flickr, which make it possible for people to socially share their pictures of the insects.?Radiolab's Cicada Tracker?and?Magicicada?as well allow citizen scientists to report their sightings in real time.

Mapping where these 17-year cicadas emerge could offer new insights on land use, climate change and the bugs themselves. The cicadas' long subterranean youth, which may be the longest of any known insect, means it's difficult for scientists to study their life cycle.

Geographically, the 17-year brood populations fit together like puzzle pieces. Brood II is almost like the keystone, since its range borders that of many other broods, University of Connecticut cicada expert John Cooley said earlier this month. Scientists think they might be able to learn about why different broods evolved by studying their boundaries.

For Johnson, the emergence will give him a chance to show off the Staten Island Museum's collection of?cicadas, the second largest in the world. He said he has dim memories of the Brood II emergences on Staten Island in 1962 and 1979, but better recollections from last time, in 1996.

From that year, Johnson recalls "lots of cicada song and activity in the woodlands, lots of media attention, and my youngest son was born three months before the emergence, so he is a 'cicada baby,' and gets to measure his life in cicada years."

iTunes Movie Trailers app updated with video quality selection and Fandango ticket purchasing

Apple?s iTunes Movie Trailers app for iPhone and iPad has been updated with the ability to switch between standard and high definition video during playback, while also adding the ability to purchase tickets through the Fandango app.

Users will now see a small icon on the left-hand side of the playback controls, which, when tapped, allows users to change the video quality they see. This allows users with lower-resolution devices to watch trailers more quickly, without having to wait for a larger video to load. Speaking of loading, Apple has made some speed improvements to the app, with trailers now taking less time to start playing.

The In Theaters section of the app now includes the ability to redirect users to the Fandango app in order to purchase movie tickets. While the app has long included movie showtimes for local theaters, this update takes that one step further. In the timeline display, find the correct showtime for you movie and tap the corresponding blue dot to make the ?Get Tickets? button popup. Tap the button to be redirected to the Fandango app?s ticket purchasing screen for that movie at that time.

The update is currently available on the App Store, so go get it and tell us what you think.

NASA's WISE mission finds 'lost' asteroid family members

May 29, 2013 ? Data from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) have led to a new and improved family tree for asteroids in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Astronomers used millions of infrared snapshots from the asteroid-hunting portion of the WISE all-sky survey, called NEOWISE, to identify 28 new asteroid families. The snapshots also helped place thousands of previously hidden and uncategorized asteroids into families for the first time. The findings are a critical step in understanding the origins of asteroid families, and the collisions thought to have created these rocky clans.

"NEOWISE has given us the data for a much more detailed look at the evolution of asteroids throughout the solar system," said Lindley Johnson, the program executive for the Near-Earth Object Observation Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "This will help us trace the NEOs back to their sources and understand how some of them have migrated to orbits hazardous to the Earth."

The main asteroid belt is a major source of near-Earth objects (NEOs), which are those asteroids and comets that come within 28 million miles (45 million kilometers) of Earth's path around the sun. Some near-Earth objects start out in stable orbits in the main asteroid belt, until a collision or gravitational disturbance flings them inward like flippers in a game of pinball.

The NEOWISE team looked at about 120,000 main belt asteroids out of the approximately 600,000 known. They found that about 38,000 of these objects, roughly one third of the observed population, could be assigned to 76 families, 28 of which are new. In addition, some asteroids thought to belong to a particular family were reclassified.

An asteroid family is formed when a collision breaks apart a large parent body into fragments of various sizes. Some collisions leave giant craters. For example, the asteroid Vesta's southern hemisphere was excavated by two large impacts. Other smash-ups are catastrophic, shattering an object into numerous fragments, as was the case with the Eos asteroid family. The cast-off pieces move together in packs, traveling on the same path around the sun, but over time the pieces become more and more spread out.

Previous knowledge of asteroid family lineages comes from observations of their orbits. NEOWISE also looked at the asteroids' reflectivity to identify family members.

Asteroids in the same family generally have similar mineral composition and reflect similar amounts of light. Some families consist of darker-colored, or duller, asteroids, while others are made up of lighter-colored, or shinier, rocks. It is difficult to distinguish between dark and light asteroids in visible light. A large, dull asteroid can appear the same as a small, shiny one. The dark asteroid reflects less light but has more total surface area, so it appears brighter.

NEOWISE could distinguish between the dark and light asteroids because it could detct infrared light, which reveals the heat of an object. The larger the object, the more heat it gives off. When the size of an asteroid can be measured, its true reflective properties can be determined, and a group of asteroids once thought to belong to a single family circling the sun in a similar orbit can be sorted into distinct families.

"We're separating zebras from the gazelles," said Joseph Masiero of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., who is lead author of a report on the new study that appears in the Astrophysical Journal. "Before, family members were harder to tell apart because they were traveling in nearby packs. But now we have a better idea of which asteroid belongs to which family."

The next step for the team is to learn more about the original parent bodies that spawned the families.

"It's as if you have shards from a broken vase, and you want to put it back together to find out what happened," said Amy Mainzer, the NEOWISE principal investigator at JPL. "Why did the asteroid belt form in the first place and fail to become a planet? We are piecing together our asteroids' history."

JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, managed and operated WISE for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. The spacecraft was put into hibernation mode in 2011, after completing its main objectives of scanning the entire sky twice.

More information about the mission is online at: http://www.nasa.gov/wise .

Why Pentagon has doubts about no-fly zone over Syria

Reports this week that the Pentagon is putting together plans for a no-fly zone over Syria came as little surprise to most defense analysts ? after all, senior US military officials are constantly planning for war possibilities.

What is surprising, however, are concerns both within the halls of the Pentagon and among analysts as to whether a no-fly zone would actually be very helpful in protecting civilians and antigovernment fighters on the ground.

What?s more, a US military operation to create a no-fly zone could easily go awry, they add.

RECOMMENDED: Are you smarter than a US Marine? Take the recruitment quiz

Pentagon spokesman George Little dismissed the notion of any new strategizing on the Syrian front. ?There is no new military planning effort underway with regard to Syria,? he said in a statement, adding that the Joint Staff is forging ahead with ?prudent planning for a range of possible military options.?

But just how prudent would a no-fly zone be? ?For all the talk of no-fly zones, Syrian aircraft are not that relevant,? says a senior US military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey has noted that only 10 percent of casualties sustained by Syrian opposition forces are being imposed by air power. The other 90 percent come from direct fire or artillery.

Want your top political issues explained? Get customized DC Decoder updates.

What?s more, he added in remarks at a Monitor breakfast last month, ?whether the military effect would produce the kind of outcome I think that not only members of Congress but all of us would desire ? which is an end to the violence, some kind of political reconciliation among the parties, and a stable Syria ? that?s the reason I?ve been cautious, is the right word, about the application of the instrument of power, because it?s not clear to me that it would produce that outcome.?

The outcome of such an operation has the potential to ignite a larger regional war, says Aram Nerguizian, senior fellow at the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

?The risk is that things are bad enough regionally that if you have a US pilot who ends up killed or captured by [Syrian President Bashir] Assad?s forces, it offers, at best, a diplomatic opportunity for communication, but at worst, the sort of incident that leads to a larger war,? Mr. Nerguizian says.

The shoot-down of a US fighter jet is far from a remote possibility. Sen. John McCain (R) of Arizona, on the heels of his highly-publicized visit with Syrian rebel forces this week, acknowledged that US fighter jet pilots would have to ?fly into the teeth of Syria?s air defenses? in the event of a no-fly zone.

What?s more, though a no-fly zone may seem like a highly compartmentalized military operation, its impacts could ripple in a region where a number of world powers have a stake.

?A no-fly zone cannot be disconnected from the fact that this war for Syria is a regional war,? Nerguizian says, citing Sunni-Shia fault lines within Syria, as well as US-Iranian competition.

There is, too, a ?third layer that many allies thought was nonexistent for years: a US-Russia dynamic. All of these things are overlapping in a way that makes this a powder keg,? he adds. ?We don?t have visibility on how Hezbollah could retaliate, how Iran would respond, and how the Russians would handle it.?

That doesn?t mean that a no-fly zone ?is a nonoption, but it does mean that the costs are, frankly, very difficult to predict.?

Google revamps Gmail with tabbed inbox on desktop and mobile

Image

Organization is the key to a happy inbox, and Google's taking you one step closer to that stress-free experience. The company announced today that it'll be bringing a new tabbed layout to the desktop and mobile versions of Gmail, safely filing messages where they belong. The redesign lets you add up to five tabs, reorganizing them via drag-and-drop. You can set senders to appear in specific tabs and can move messages up to the primary one with a star. The upgrade is coming to the desktop, Android and iOS version of Gmail in "the next few weeks," though you can get a sneak peek on your desktop earlier by watching the mail program's gear / settings menu in the interim. There's also a video detailing the updates after the break, if you're so inclined.

Chelsea Clinton eyes global projects, gay rights

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) ? Chelsea Clinton said Tuesday she plans to become increasingly involved in the international health projects of her father's foundation and to speak out for gay rights.

The only child of former U.S. President Bill Clinton told The Associated Press during a visit to Malaysia that her focus will be on the Clinton Foundation's work, especially "related to health, not just in the United States but also around the world."

Clinton said on the sidelines of a women's conference in Malaysia's main city that she hopes to return to Southeast Asia, specifically Myanmar, where the foundation will work with authorities to distribute medicine and health products, including HIV drugs and child vaccines, at cheaper prices.

Clinton visited Myanmar earlier this week at the start of initiative to provide water purification packets to areas with unsafe water supplies. Her mother, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, made a groundbreaking visit to Myanmar in 2011 and helped nudge an elected government toward democratic reforms.

"I hope to go back soon" to Myanmar, Clinton said. "My father and my husband are quite jealous now because my mother and I both have been to the country, and they have not."

From Malaysia, Clinton travels to Cambodia to launch an effort to slash HIV-related infections and deaths.

"My goal is always to do as much as I can in whatever area I'm working in," she said.

She added that besides the Clinton Foundation's initiatives, she was committed to supporting gay rights, including marriage equality.

"It just seems so fundamental to me. I'm able to marry the person I wanted to marry," Clinton said. "That's the fundamental human imperative. Those of us who have been lucky enough should expand these rights to others."

Clinton often tweets messages supportive of gay rights. Earlier this month, she called it "progress" when France's new gay marriage law came into force and urged her followers to help build "an equitable world for all" while marking International Day Against Homophobia.

Clinton laughed off a question about whether all the work would leave her time to start a family with her husband.

"My mother asks me that all the time, and anything my mother asks me is fair game," she said.

Vizio begins shipping 2013 M-Series Smart TVs, prices start at $400

Back at this year's CES, all Vizio said about its brand new M-Series lineup of HDTVs was that they'd be hitting shelves at some point "later this year." Fast forward to today, and the company's announcing its 2013 M-Series Smart TVs are now shipping to retailers such as Best Buy, Amazon and Walmart, with interested folks being able to grab one starting at $400 for a 32-inch LED model. Speaking of which, Vizio also went ahead and modified the M-Series pricing scheme a bit, making some models a little more expensive and others slightly cheaper. For example, the Theater 3D-ready 80-inch Razor LED Smart TV (say that five times fast) is now $4,000, as opposed to the $5,000 price tag that it was announced with originally. You'll find the full MSRP list in the PR after the break, and do let us know in the comments below if you plan on snagging one of these for yourself.

Bell intros Fibe TV Wireless Receiver, takes Canadians multi-room for $199

Bell launches Fibe TV wireless receivers

Some Canadians can get multi-room TV through their providers, but a truly wire-free option hasn't been on the table -- no doubt a disappointment for backyard viewing parties. Bell is filling that void today with what it says is the first carrier-supplied wireless TV package in Canada. Fibe TV subscribers can now pick up as many as five Wireless Receivers (really, Motorola VIP2502 boxes) to extend their HD viewing and DVR control to the whole home without cables. It sounds easy; the real challenge, we figure, will be getting a Wireless Receiver in the first place. Customers have to live in Montreal, Quebec City or Toronto for Fibe TV to even be an option, and each Wireless Receiver costs either $7 per month or $199 up front.

2013 Memorial Day Open Thread & Smorgasbord - Canal Street ...

When you need a break from being out in the sun, come join the Memorial Day discussion with your fellow Saints fans on this holiday from work!

Good morning and welcome to Memorial Day 2013. I hope everyone's got good weather and the chance to spend time with family and friends, and invoking some quiet reflection time (if that's your thing) as we take a pause from work to recognize those veterans who died while serving in the armed forces.

For our holiday enjoyment, I have collected a few odds and ends that are somewhat related to the day...

First, from my friends at Kissing Suzy Kolber, last week's offseason mock draft covered a few rounds of choices (yeah, I went there) of good beers for Memorial Day. CLICK HERE

And they also had this BBQ and grilling roundtable...CLICK HERE

With food and drink covered, what about outdoor activities, Hans? Anyone for swimming, yard darts, badminton, volleyball, or horseshoes? Or maybe drinking while floating in a pool is your thing. That sounds kinda nice.

There will be quite a few MLB games going on today with lots of folks available to attend, and since NFL folks sometimes toss out the ceremonial first pitches, NFL.com sends that topic right over the plate for us...CLICK HERE

And with nighttime fireworks being a fun thing for summertime, RIGHT HERE is a photo slide show of some NFL game fireworks shows.

* * *

So, what are your plans for the day? Are you fortunate enough to have the day off AND all your chores done?

Not to take anything away from the veterans, but this day takes on added significance for me because my birthday is today, too (SSP). I am now 42 years old, or as my Dad will say in our FaceTime talk later today, "Hans, 42 years ago you came kicking and screaming into a world you had nothing to do with!" We're not sure of the origin of that sentence, but he's been saying it to all of us in the family for 30-something years on our birthdays. (And now you see where I get lots of my charm and grace and wit.)

Mrs. H and I will be going out for a bonus morning of weekend latte fun later, and then after the aforementioned Birthday FaceTime session with my Mom and Dad, we'll host our 17-month-old grandson and his parents for a visit of walking over to the neighborhood pool (which opened on Saturday) for some fun in the sun followed by a meal of chicken and corn on the cob we grilled earlier in the day with chocolate birthday cupcakes for dessert. Yum!

Take care everyone and have a GREAT MEMORIAL DAY!!!

Best May ever at the box office - are we in for a record summer, too?

By Todd Cunningham

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Maybe this summer movie season isn't too crowded, after all. "Fast & Furious 6," "Iron Man 3" and a handful of hits have made this a record-breaking May, and the summer box office is off to its best start ever.

With more than $1.04 billion in grosses already, the month has topped May 2011's previous record of $1.03 billion, according to BoxOffice.com. Universal's "Fast & Furious 6" provided a huge boost, racing to $120 million in its debut and leading the overall box office past $315 million, which shattered the Memorial Day weekend record.

But the depth in the marketplace made a big difference, too. And we're talking about depth rather than the nasty traffic jam some feared because together, the top six films brought in more than $300 million.

"What this means is that the marketplace is not just handling the volume," Exhibitor Relations vice-president and senior analysts Jeff Bock told TheWrap, "it's embracing it.

"That was the question going into the summer - were there enough moviegoers to sustain so many big movies at a reasonable level? So far the answer is yes, in a big way," Bock said.

There's no denying it's crowded. "The Hangover Part III" almost surely would have done better had it not gone head-to-head with "Fast 6,"and it probably won't do half the domestic business that "Hangover II" ultimately did, but $63 million over five days isn't a disaster. And Fox opened its animated "Epic" to a better-than-expected $42 million over the holiday.

The movies already in the marketplace held their own, despite all the competition.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" dropped just 47 percent in its second week, and wound up with $47 million, raising hopes that the Paramount-Skydance space sequel can at least get close to the $257 million total the first film did.

Disney's blockbuster Marvel sequel "Iron Man 3" is still going strong, dropping just 43 percent as it added another $24 million to its $1.14 billion worldwide total in its fourth week. And Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' "The Great Gatsby" fell off just 43 percent and brought in $17 million in its third week.

"You typically don't see three wide openers on Memorial Day like we had - last year there was pretty much just ?Men In Black III' - and the fact that we saw the weekend we did is a really positive sign for the rest of the summer."

Another good sign is that June - often relatively soft at the box office - looks particularly strong. Warner Bros.' "Man of Steel" (June 14), Disney's animated "Monsters University" (June 21 ) and Fox's Sandra Bullock-Melissa McCarthy comedy "Heat" all look like sure things. Paramount's Brad Pitt zombie epic "World War Z" (June 21) and Sony's Roland Emmerich thriller "White House Down" (June 28) could do significant business, too.

July will bring "Despicable Me 2," which is tracking extremely well for Universal, Warner Bros. Guillermo del Toro sci-fi fantasy "Pacific Rim" and Disney's "The Lone Ranger."

That all adds up to a summer that should top last year's $4.30 billion haul, which was dominated by "The Avengers," and could beat the all-time high from 2011 of $4.32 billion.

The crowded summer slate still creates some issues, for theater owners if not moviegoers.

On Friday, Sony is opening its Will and Jaden Smith sci-fi thriller "After Earth" on about 3,000 screens and Lionsgate and Summit are rolling out the Jessie Eisenberg thriller "Now You See Me" in roughly 2,800 theaters. Both might have wound up on more screens in a different, less competitive summer.

"But if you were a theater owner, would you move ?Fast & Furious 6' out?" Bock asked.

Should You Get BRCA Gene Testing?

May 27, 2013 10:19am

The death of Angelina Jolie?s aunt, Debbie Martin, has once again highlighted the genetic risk of breast cancer.

gty angelina jolie thg 130514 wblog Angelina Jolie Loses Aunt to Breast Cancer: Should You Get BRCA Gene Testing?

Alastair Grant/AFP/Getty Images

Martin, 61, was the younger sister of Jolie?s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who died from ovarian cancer at the age of 56. Martin?s ?death comes ?two weeks after Jolie revealed she?d had a preventive double mastectomy after testing positive for a hereditary mutation in one of the?BRCA genes.

Women with mutations in the genes BRCA1 or BRCA2 are five times more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer and up to 28 times more likely to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer, according to?the National Cancer Institute. That means that 60 percent of women with a BRCA mutation will develop breast cancer in their lifetimes, compared with 12 percent of women in the general population, and up to 40 percent of women with a BRCA mutation will develop ovarian cancer, compared with 1.4 percent of women without a mutation.

Angelina Jolie Reveals She Had Double Mastectomy to Prevent Breast Cancer

Less than 1 percent of women carry a faulty BRCA gene, making costly genetic testing unnecessary for most. But women with a mother and aunt diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer are prime candidates for the test, according to the NCI.

For women who are not of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, the agency recommends genetic testing if you have:

  • Two first-degree relatives diagnosed with breast cancer, with one of them before age 51. First-degree relatives include your mother or sister;
  • Three or more first- or second-degree relatives diagnosed with breast cancer. Second-degree relatives include your grandmother or aunt;
  • A combination of first- and second-degree relatives diagnosed with breast cancer?or ovarian cancer;
  • A?first-degree relative?diagnosed with cancer in both breasts;
  • A combination of first- or second-degree relatives diagnosed with ovarian cancer;
  • A first- or second-degree relative diagnosed with breast?and?ovarian cancer;
  • A male relative diagnosed with breast cancer.

For women of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, who are more likely to carry a specific BRCA2 defect passed from generation to generation, the NCI recommends genetic testing if you have:

  • A first-degree relative diagnosed with breast?or?ovarian cancer;
  • Two second-degree relatives on the same side of the family diagnosed with breast?or ovarian cancer.

About 2 percent of adult women have a family history pattern described above but, again, less than 1 percent of women will have a BRCA mutation.

?Not every?woman in such families carries a harmful?BRCA1?or?BRCA2?mutation, and?not every?cancer in such families is linked to a harmful mutation in one of these genes,? according to the NCI. ?Furthermore,?not every?woman who has a harmful?BRCA1?or?BRCA2?mutation will develop breast and/or ovarian cancer.?

Women without one of the family history patterns described above are unlikely to have a harmful BRCA?mutation, according to the NCI.

Based on her genetic testing results, Jolie opted for a preventive double mastectomy ? the surgical removal of both breasts to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Studies suggest that preventive mastectomy can reduce breast cancer risk by about 90 percent in high-risk women, according to the NCI. But surgery carries risks, too, so women are advised to talk to their doctors about the procedure?s pros, cons and possible alternatives.

Senator: Fire commanders allowing sex assault

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A member of the Senate Armed Services Committee says that military commanders who allow sexual assault to flourish should be fired.

South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham says that women who serve in the military are needed and, quote: "putting up with way too much crap."

Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin said victims need to know they're protected and have their day in a court they can trust.

A Pentagon study found that 26,000 members of the armed forces faced sexual assault last year, but only a few thousand cases were reported.

President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel addressed the issue separately in graduation speeches at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Durbin and Graham spoke on Fox News Sunday.

Clawfoot Tub Shower ? Should You Install It Too? - Home ...

Folks who love clawfoot tubs usually fall under some of these groups:

People that actually enjoy taking a bath and also like spending time soaking in their bathtub more frequently. Individuals who are inspired by the long lasting elegance and fantastic form of tubs and have had the opportunity of utilizing it one or two times and liked its style to the extent of having it at theoir home to enjoy its look and utilize it at leisure. There are many who have inherited one of these brilliant classic beauties and value their attractiveness and also have the need of a shower.

Whatever be the situation, any owner of a clawfoot tub without a shower would love to explore the possibilities of including one. At the outset some may consider replacing the clawfoot with something different. But this isn?t such a wise decision. There?s a better way, and that?s to retain the tub and just include a shower within! Thats probably the most convenient and useful way of handling the situation. Consequently, what you would be having in your bathroom would be a clawfoot bathtub shower.

In addition to being very comfortable and practical, this option will also increase the value of your house so you will get extra money if you want to sell your property one day. Should you ask a real estate agent about the clawfoot tub, he?ll tell you that it is a great addition to the home, but many buyers wouldn?t like to purchase a house with no shower. Without a shower within the bathing room, the client will evaluate how much he needs to spend in order to install one. As a matter of fact having a shower installed is neither too costly nor does it take too long setting it up done.

(AP) ? From Congress to the White House, pressure is mounting to hold military commanders accountable for the rising number of sexual assaults in the armed services.

"This needs to end," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and a member of the Armed Services Committee, said Sunday. "When a victim comes forward, they should have an advocate to walk them through the military justice system, and commanders who allow this to continue to allow this to flourish quite frankly should be fired."

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said the military's future includes both men and women in leadership, and cultural changes are needed "when it comes to the command structure" to make sexual assault and harassment "unacceptable, intolerable; and those who engage in it should pay a price."

The extent of the assaults came to light when the Pentagon released a report earlier this month estimating that as many as 26,000 military members may have been sexually assaulted last year and that thousands of victims are unwilling to come forward despite new oversight and assistance programs. That figure is an increase over the 19,000 estimated assaults in 2011.

Retired Marine Gen. John Allen, who retired in February after 19 months commanding allied forces in Afghanistan in order to attend to his wife's health issues, encouraged commanders to address the issue and tell subordinates exactly what was expected.

"Commanders can't be ambiguous about this. We can't not talk about that," Allen said Sunday. "Commanders (have) got to stand in front of their units and tell the people what they expect. Because silence isn't good enough. This is an opportunity to lead, and we should be seizing it."

Several recent arrests have added to the military's embarrassment. A soldier at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point was charged with secretly photographing women, including in a bathroom. The Air Force officer who led the service's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response unit was arrested on charges of groping a woman. And the manager of the Army's sexual assault response program at Fort Campbell, Ky., was relieved of his post after his arrest in a domestic dispute with his ex-wife.

The comments from Durbin, Graham and Allen capped a week of attempts to address the Pentagon's findings. President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel raised the issue separately in graduation speeches at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

"Those who commit sexual assault are not only committing a crime; they threaten the trust and discipline that makes our military strong," Obama said Friday. "That's why we have to be determined to stop these crimes, because they've got no place in the greatest military on Earth."

Hagel called on the graduating West Point cadets Saturday to use their leadership to address the epidemic.

"This scourge must be stamped out. We are all accountable and responsible for ensuring that this happens. We cannot fail the Army or America. We cannot fail each other, and we cannot fail the men and women that we lead."

Members of a House panel on Wednesday approved legislation that would strip commanding officers of their longstanding authority to unilaterally change or dismiss court-martial convictions in rape and assault cases. The bill would also require that service members found guilty of sexual offenses be dismissed or dishonorably discharged. The legislation will be folded into a broader defense policy bill that the full House will consider in the coming weeks.

Sharon Disher graduated from the Naval Academy in 1980 in the first class that included women. She said Friday she's disappointed the military is still grappling with sexual assault issues but applauded the president for raising the subject.

"The more we talk about it, the more we're going to do something about it, and that's the thing we never did," she said. "I guess we've just got to keep the conversation going until we fix the problem."

Durbin and Graham spoke on "Fox News Sunday." Allen appeared on ABC's "This Week."

Robots, drones tested to help Australians with farming

Salah Sukkarieh, professor of Robotics and Intelligent Systems at the University of Sydney, Australian Centre for Field Robotics, stands next to one of his robotic aircraft in his laboratory in Sydney April 24, 2013.

SYDNEY ? Moving carefully along a row of apple trees, two of Australia's newest agricultural workers check if the fruit is ripe or the soil needs water or fertilizer.

Meet "Mantis" and "Shrimp", agricultural robots being tested to do these tasks and more in a bid to cut costs and improve productivity in Australia's economically vital farm sector, which exported the U.S. equivalent of $38.8 billion of produce in 2012.

Australia is one of the leaders in the field and, with a minimum wage of about $15 U.S. an hour and a limited workforce, has a big incentive to use robots and other technology such as unmanned aircraft to improve efficiency.

It hopes to tap fast-growing Asian neighbors, where the swelling ranks of the middle class increasingly want more varied and better quality food from blueberries to beef.

"The adoption of new technology is going to be crucial for Australia to maintain its competitiveness in terms of the global agricultural sector," said Luke Matthews, commodities strategist at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

"If we don't adopt new technology, we can give up on these high-flying ambitions of being the food bowl of Asia."

Agriculture now accounts for 2 percent of Australia's gross domestic product, but the government forecasts it could reach 5 percent by 2050. Its growth is particularly important now the once-booming mining sector is slowing.

Australia is the world's second-biggest wheat exporter and arable farmers are already using specialized technology aimed at improving efficiency, including satellite positioning software to allow farmers to map out land and soil to determine optimal inputs.

Using such technology to optimize the use of fertilizer can boost profitability at grain farms by 14 percent, according to a study by Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.

Plucky ability

A robot effortlessly plucking fruit is some way off, though a range of simpler tasks are within reach to add to existing technology such as automatic steering of harvesters.

Salah Sukkarieh, professor of Robotics and Intelligent Systems at the University of Sydney and developer of Mantis and Shrimp, says the next phase aims for robots to do increasingly complex jobs such as watering and ultimately harvesting.

"We have fitted them with a lot of sensors, vision, laser, radar and conductivity sensors ? including GPS and thermal sensors," said Sukkarieh, speaking at his laboratory housing a collection of both ground robots and unmanned air vehicles.

The technology could have the biggest application in horticulture, Australia's third-largest agricultural sector with exports of $1.71 billion in the last marketing year, since a fixed farm layout lends itself better to using robots.

Robots and an unmanned air vehicle that are being developed at the University of Sydney had passed field tests at an almond farm in Mildura, Victoria state, said Sukkarieh.

Propelled by sets of wheels and about the height of a man, the robots were named after the native Mantis shrimp because of the marine crustacean's 16 different color receptors, capable of detecting up to 12 colors. Humans only have four, three of which pick up colors.

This capacity to recognize color already allows the robots to sense whether fruit is ripe.

Reuters

A scientist performs a field test with a 'Hexi-copter' air robot and two ground robots named Mantis and Shrimp, in reference to the marine crustacean's 16 different color receptors, at an almond farm near the Victorian city of Mildura.

The data can then be processed by computer algorithms to determine what action the robot should take. This could be to water or apply fertilizer or pesticides, or to sweep and prune vegetation, and eventually the aim is to harvest the crop.

"If tomorrow we got an apple, orange or tomato farmer that wants a robot to go up and down these tree crops reliably and accurately, we can do that within six months to a year."

"The question is can we make them more intelligent," added Sukkarieh, who also sees the technology being attached to standard farm vehicles and foresees a fully automated horticulture farm within 10 years.

But no robots and apples

Australian farmers, who depend on seasonal labor for jobs such as picking fruit and vegetables, said they would welcome high-tech help.

"Berry picking by a robot would be difficult but if they could produce a robot, I could make a significant saving," said Allan Dixon, co-owner of the Clyde River Berry Farm in New South Wales, who typically takes on five people every year.

To get enough agricultural workers, Australia allows in some labor from neighboring Pacific island countries and East Timor, as well as using backpackers on temporary work visas.

Some fruit farmers remain skeptical.

"Apples will always need to be harvested by hand, due to their fragile nature. They bruise very easily," said Lucinda Giblett, director at Newton Orchards in Western Australia.

"We see no current opportunities offered by agricultural robots. Even as a pruning device, application is very limited," added Giblett.

Goal of supplying Asia

Further productivity gains will be needed if Australia is to reach its target of being the main food supplier to Asia.

A 2011 study by the Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource Economics and Sciences said around two-thirds of the increase in the monetary value of agricultural production in the last 50 years in the country was down to gains in productivity

Another survey by the Grains Research and Development Corporation showed 67 percent of respondents in 2011 used auto-steer technology to guide machinery such as harvesters and sprayers, up from 47 percent in 2008.

Obstacles to using more technology remain, however, including the cost of buying or renting equipment and slower growth in research and development spending. Some studies show growth in the use of satellite imagery and soil mapping has stagnated in Australia and the United States in recent years.

Regardless of whether it can meet its targets to supply more food to Asia, Australia is expected to play a big role in global food security by being one of the test beds for new ways to produce food more efficiently in often harsh conditions.

How cockroaches evolved so as to bypass 'roach motels'

Chalk up another point for the nearly invincible cockroach. Some roaches have lost their sweet tooth for certain sugars, commonly used to bait poison traps, through genetic adaptation.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / May 24, 2013

This image made from video provided by Ayako Wada-Katsumata shows glucose-averse German cockroaches avoiding a dab of jelly, which contains glucose, and favoring the peanut butter. For 30 years, people have been getting rid of cockroaches by setting out sweet-tasting bait mixed with poison. But in the early 1990s, a formerly effective product stopped working. Later studies showed that these roaches were specifically turned off by the sugar glucose in the syrup and that the key is an altered behavior of certain nerves that signal the brain about foods.

If you're a cockroach whose ancestors have scurried across the planet essentially in modern form for the past 146 million years, it's a safe bet you've learned a thing or two about survival.

Now, researchers have uncovered one secret to that survival, especially in the face of human exterminators. It's all in the bugs' equivalent of taste buds. Over a remarkably short time, the genetics behind their taste buds have shifted in ways that signal "poison ahead," even when the poison is baited with a form of sugar known as glucose.

"We don't know if glucose actually tastes bitter" to roaches that have evolved to avoid the sugar, notes Coby Schal, an entomologist at North Carolina State University and a member of the team conducting the study. But the team did find that when these roaches tasted glucose, the action fired up tiny taste sensors that respond exclusively to bitterness. The bugs dropped what they were about to eat and beat feet to hunt for more palatable morsels.

A relative handful of entomologists has been studying roaches for years, largely with the aim of finding more-effective ways to eradicate the pests. The bugs find nourishment in everything from food scraps to dirty laundry. Roach infestations can represent a health threat as well, researchers say, by spreading diseases.

Beyond the yuck factor, which is enormous, the creatures also display some remarkable traits. Scientists note that they can live life as hermits or in extended families whose fathers and mothers are monogamous. They can breathe intermittently, holding their breath for up to seven minutes as a way to conserve body moisture that might otherwise escape as they exhale.

And they serve as ubiquitous models for studying a range of biological functions they share with other insects.

Indeed, the Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor University's Texas Medical Center in Houston currently is working to sequence the genome of the German cockroach to better understand what makes these pests tick.

For its part, the North Carolina State University team has focused on the taste mechanisms that cockroaches employ. The study is the first to show how an insect's cellular tools ? in this case, taste receptors ? control its ability to adapt to changes in its environment. In this case, the change is the arrival of baited poison.

In the mid-1980s, exterminators shifted from sprays to bug traps to deal with roaches. But within six or seven years, the roaches increasingly avoided the traps, despite the sugary come-hither coatings on the poison that the traps contained. The bugs had become glucose-averse.

Jules Silverman, another member of the team, found that the aversion was handed down from one generation to another, and so concluded that the emergence of glucose aversion stemmed from a genetic change in the population of bugs exhibiting the aversion.

The current study, led by Ayako Wada-Katsumata, also at North Carolina State, focused on the bugs' taste mechanism because of its relationship to eradication efforts. The team compared the taste-related behavior of the sugar-shunning roaches with roaches that still readily accepted glucose as sweet.

A roach's taste buds actually are tiny hairs on appendages near its mouth. Some hairs are sensitive to sweet, others to bitter. But even the hairs responsive to sweet have a mix of sensors on them ? one for sweet, one for bitter, and two that sense both tastes. The hairs most sensitive to sweet also can distinguish between glucose and another sweetener, fructose.

These "sweet" hairs and their mix of sensors were the focus of the study.

The team first analyzed the sweet-hair responses of roaches not averse to glucose, then turned their attention to the glucose-avoiders.

The team found that in the glucose-averse population, contact with glucose triggered a much more intense response from bitter sensors than it did from sweet sensors on the sugar-sensitive hairs. Indeed, the researchers say the response from the bitter sensors actually inhibited the response from the sweet sensors. Yet, when the team changed the sweetener from glucose to fructose, the glucose-averse bugs lapped it up.

The researchers are now trying to figure out whether the aversion trait evolved internally within the averse populations, whether the trait actually is an ancient, dormant tool for picking good food from bad reawakened by extermination efforts, or whether it came about through interbreeding with populations that were naturally glucose-averse.

As for exterminators, the team recommends not one attracting agent, not two, but a "smorgasbord" of attractants to baffle a bug that "learns" quickly and retains those lessons down the generations.

(AP) ? Internal Affairs officers on Saturday were looking into allegations made by actress Amanda Bynes that New York Police Department officers sexually assaulted her when she was charged with heaving a marijuana bong out the window of her 36th-floor Manhattan apartment.

The 27-year-old former child star first alleged during her arraignment on Friday that police illegally entered her apartment after being called to her midtown building. But in a Twitter message believed to be from the troubled actress posted Saturday, Bynes alleged that her arresting officer also sexually assaulted her.

"As it would with any such allegation, regardless of its credibility, IAB is investigating it," said the NYPD's chief spokesman, Paul Browne, referring to the internal affairs bureau.

The Twitter handle used to make the sexual assault allegations Saturday does not appear to be verified by the social network? but Bynes' friend, former Hollywood publicist Jonathan Jaxson, said Saturday the tweet was made from Bynes' account. Twitter did not immediately return a request for comment.

In court on Friday, the former "Hairspray" star made no mention of the sexual assault allegations, though she did complain of illegal entry to her apartment. She's been charged with reckless endangerment, attempted tampering with evidence and unlawful possession of marijuana.

A law enforcement official who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because of an ongoing investigation said the building manager was with officers at Bynes' apartment when they arrived Thursday night. The official said officers were kept waiting approximately five minutes before she opened the door to them. The same official said the building manager told internal affair investigators nothing untoward happened.

Bynes was released by Chief New York County Judge Neil Ross on her own recognizance because, Ross said, he did not believe her to be a flight risk. But in releasing her, Ross also issued a stern warning to Bynes, telling her not to get rearrested or miss any court dates. She's due back in court on July 9.

Attempts to reach Bynes' arraignment lawyer were unsuccessful Saturday evening.

Bynes rose to fame starring in Nickelodeon's "All That" and has also starred in several films, including 2010's "Easy A." But she has been in the news more recently because of several scrapes with the law and bizarre public behavior.

Bynes was arrested Thursday night after building officials called police to complain she was rolling a joint and smoking pot in the lobby. The officers went to her apartment where they saw heavy smoke and a bong sitting on the kitchen counter. They said she tossed the bong out the window in front of them, prosecutors said Friday.

Iran fields 'massive' number of missile launchers

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran has fielded a "massive" number of new long-range missile launchers, state TV reported Sunday.

The new weapon components delivered to Iranian military units would allow them to "crush the enemy" with the mass simultaneous fire of long-range surface-to-surface missiles, Defence Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi was quoted as saying.

TV showed footage of him inspecting two dozen launch trucks without missiles at an outdoor site. The report did not specify the type of missile that would be fired, nor more details on the number of launchers deployed.

Some of Iran's surface-to-surface missiles are estimated to have ranges of over 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles), capable of hitting its arch-foe Israel and the U.S. bases in the region.

Vahidi did not specify who was the "enemy" and said Iran would never start a war.

Iran considers both the United States and Israel as enemies. Both have not ruled out a military option against Iran's nuclear facilities, which the West suspects are aimed at weapons development. Iran denies the charge.

From time to time Iran announces military achievements that cannot be independently verified.

Facing a Western military embargo, Iran is pursuing a program for military self-sufficiency, producing weapons ranging from light submarines and jet fighters to torpedoes and missiles.

Washington Criticizes Iran After Two Key Presidential Candidates Barred

The United States has criticized Iran after authorities there barred two potentially key candidates from running in next month's presidential election.

Former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie -- a close aide to outgoing President Mahmud Ahmadinejad -- were denied a place on the ballot by the Guardians Council of clerics and jurists.

Only eight of nearly 700 potential presidential candidates were approved by the Guardians Council.

Analysts said the majority of the approved candidates are hardliners loyal to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell urged the Tehran authorities to give Iranians a free vote.

Ventrell said the Guardians Council had approved candidates "based solely on who the regime believes will represent its interests, rather than those of the Iranian people."

Ahmadinejad Denounces Mashaie Disqualification

In related news, outgoing Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad has vowed to challenge a decision to disqualify Mashaie from the presidential election on June 14.

Ahmadinejad said on May 22 that he will take up Mashaie's disqualification with Khamenei, calling it an act of "oppression."

Chief nuclear negotiator Said Jalili and Khamenei's foreign policy adviser Ali Akbar Velayati are among the approved candidates.
