Bombs target soccer players, spectators in Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Bombs targeting soccer players and young men who had gathered to watch a match in Iraq killed seven people on Saturday.

A roadside bomb in a busy market killed another three people, bringing the death toll to 10, police and medics said.

The violence is part of a trend of increasing militant attacks since the start of the year, which claimed more than 1,000 lives in May alone, making it the deadliest month since the sectarian bloodletting of 2006-7.

In recent days, men playing in local soccer fixtures and watching matches have been the targets - after spates of attacks on both Sunni and Shi'ite mosques and the security forces.

The reason behind the attacks on soccer players and spectators is not clear.

Police and medics said the bomb was planted inside a coffee shop in central Baghdad and killed four young men who had gathered to watch an under 20s international match between Iraq and Chile on television.

Twin roadside bombs exploded near a soccer stadium, killing three players in Muqdadiya, 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the capital, and the blast in the market left a further three people dead in a town west of Baghdad, police said.

Earlier this week, twin blasts at a neighborhood football stadium killed five players and two blasts tore through cafes where scores of young men had gathered to watch another match, killing eight people.

Concerns that Iraq may lapse back into full-scale sectarian conflict have mounted in recent months amid tensions fuelled by the civil war in neighboring Syria, where mainly Sunni rebels are fighting to overthrow a leader backed by Shi'ite Iran.

Sunni insurgents including al Qaeda's Iraqi affiliate have been regaining ground, recruiting from the country's Sunni minority, which resents Shi'ite domination since the U.S.-led invasion that toppled former dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Adding butter to coffee sends energy levels soaring

New York, June 28 (ANI): A coffee executive has created a new coffee, which has butter as it?s driving ingredient., and is said to boost your energy and increase weight loss.

Dave Asprey, executive of the Bulletproof brand and blog told the Daily News said that just putting butter into bad coffee is a bad idea.

Asprey came out with the Bulletproof recipe, which calls for three ingredients, which are upgraded coffee, MCT (medium chain triglycerides) coconut palm oil and grass-fed butter.

The Bulletproof plan has caught the attention of people following paleo diet - a nutritional plan focusing on eating animal proteins and fats, a ?Today? show report said.

Asprey said that he re-engineered the process of making green coffee, and calls it the Bulletproof process.

He added that it affects how the coffee is grown, how it is treated and how it is shipped to the U.S.

On average, a cup has about 100 - 200 calories depending on how much butter has been added. (ANI)

Something new | Step Talk

So my DH is in the military and every year we get two weeks of block leave (vacation). Every year when this comes around we have to go home (our home state, we're stationed in a different state). We go there every year on our two week vacation to see his kids. There is no parenting plan and "monster" won't let us bring them to our current station, bc it's "to far away". It's just very unfair to me that on our ONLY vacation we have to go to SC, back to our hometown, and sit at MY parents house for two solid weeks. Don't get me wrong I know my husband needs to see his kids, and I do enjoy getting to see my family. But I feel it's unfair, why can't we actually go somewhere different on vacation? The beach, the mountains, a freaking amusement park, something! It takes every last dime we have just to drive to SC and back and in November we'll be moving to a different post even farther away from SC. The facts are this though.

*We can't go anywhere bc we only have money to go one place.

*We have two cars but DH thought it would be a "good" idea to buy a 1979 Trans Am as his everyday car, it won't make it the 500 miles to SC and the 500 miles back. So if we did go someplace different we couldn't take all the kids bc my car has only 5 seat bealts (his kids go on vacation with their monster) why should my BS4 and our daughter be confined to just going to SC all the time?

*I want to do something as a family, I know his kids are part of this family but their "monster" won't let us take them anywhere. I feel that we all have to suffer come vacation time.

*I feel guilty bc I feel as though I'm being selfish, but it hurts my feelings. When he was with his ex they would go to Florida, the mountains etc.... Now that they're divorced "our" vacation is to SC to see his kids. How do I go about telling him that I'm tired of going to SC all the time? How do I tell him he needs to think about me and the family he's got that actually live with him? Am I being unfair? I feel as though if he had been smarter while going through his divorce we wouldn't have this problem. But as it stands now she makes ALL the rules and we have to follow them, so noo taking the kids out of state for us.

Appeals board upholds permit for Christo project

DENVER (AP) ? An appeals board is upholding the Bureau of Land Management's decision to grant the artist Christo a permit for his Over the River project, which involves temporarily suspending 5.9 miles worth of silvery fabric panels in sections over 42 miles of the Arkansas River.

The Interior Board of Land Appeals on Friday rejected arguments that the BLM didn't fully consider impacts of Over the River before granting the permit.

Meanwhile, two lawsuits challenging Over the River in state and federal courts are still pending.

"We can now move on from the agency hijinks and into federal court where we can get an unbiased review of this project," said Michael Harris, a lawyer representing the group Rags Over the Arkansas River, which is trying to block Christo's plan. "We fully expect the court to find that the OTR project approval is illegal."

New York-based Christo said in a written statement that he remains confident that state and federal permitting processes were thorough and complete. "This is one of three legal hurdles that needed to be overcome, and I am very happy with this decision," Christo said.

Even if Christo wins in the lawsuits, it would be at least 2016 before the project would be ready for public display.

He and his late wife, Jeanne-Claude, got their first inkling for Over the River in 1992.

Work to set up a system of anchors and cables to suspend the fabric panels over the river would unfold over roughly two years. The project would be displayed for two weeks in the month of August, when the river would be calm enough for rafters to peer up at the fabric as they float underneath and when drivers on U.S. 50 along the river could look down.

Denver-based environmental consultant Rocky Smith, who was among those filing the administrative appeal of the BLM's permitting decision, said he still thinks Over the River is "horribly inappropriate" for the canyon Christo plans to use.

Opponents contend the project threatens bighorn sheep, public safety, traffic on U.S. 50, and businesses that depend on the scenic river to draw anglers, rafters and tourists.

Christo's team has said it plans dozens of measures to mitigate impacts.

Building PayPal Galactic for Off-World Payments Will Take Years

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. ? Developing a cosmic cash system to meet the needs of future space tourists and interplanetary settlers is a complicated task that will take several years to complete, leaders of the new project say.

On Thursday (June 27), online-payment company PayPal and the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute unveiled PayPal Galactic, an initiative that aims to figure out the best way to process financial transactions beyond Earth.

This is much easier said than done, with many big questions demanding attention right off the bat, officials said. [9 Ways to Stay Safe Using PayPal]

"What will be our standard currency up there? How will the banking system need to adapt?" PayPal president David Marcus said here at the SETI Institute during the project's unveiling on Thursday. "How will risk and fraud management evolve? IP address from space? That's not a country for us; how are we going to deal with that?"

It's also unclear at the moment how off-world banking transactions will be regulated, and which bodies here on Earth would do the regulating, Marcus added, stressing that such issues will take a while to work out.

"We will focus on answering those questions and inviting everyone around the table who wants to participate ? scientists and the industry as well," Marcus said. "We're really, really looking forward to having the conversation for the next couple of years."

It's important to start this lengthy and involved process now, Marcus said, because private spaceflight is set to open the final frontier up to the masses soon.

Indeed, Virgin Galactic?and XCOR Aerospace may begin commercial flights to suborbital space within the next year or so. These companies are currently charging $250,000 and $95,000, respectively, for seats aboard their spaceships, but Marcus sees the price coming down dramatically before much longer.

"Futurists expect space travel to follow what happened to air travel," he said, adding that a roundtrip plane ticket from New York to Los Angeles cost $4,500 in 1935 ? the equivalent of $80,000 today.

So it's not hard to imagine that Virgin's $250,000 ticket price could come down to just a few thousand dollars in a decade or so, enabling large numbers of people to fly to space, Marcus said.

While brief suborbital flights can easily be booked and paid for here on Earth, Marcus and others see bigger things following in their wake that call out for a new off-planet monetary system ? orbiting hotels, luxury "space yachts" for the megarich and, eventually, outposts on the moon and Mars.

"The time is right," Marcus said. "Space tourism is taking off."

BlueStacks announces GamePop Mini Android game console, free

GamePop_Mini_large

The market for Android game consoles is about to get a little more crowded after BlueStacks ? makers of the Android emulator for desktops ? announced today their latest entry, the GamePop Mini. Essentially a tiny version of the GamePop we told you guys about back in May, the Mini features a similar subscription model to its older brother but with a catch ? the Mini is free with a 1-year subscription to BlueStack?s gaming service.

Because the subscription gaming model is so new (and arguably a tough sell), BlueStacks sees the Mini a the perfect way to build a subscriber base, something that?s not easy to do when you?re charging up front for hardware. Of course, some quick math will tell you that, at $7 a month for 12 months, the GamePop will still run you $84. That gives you unlimited access to GamePop?s growing game library which includes over 500 game partners. BlueStacks has also created a technology called Looking Glass to help make their platform more enticing to developers by allowing quick and easy porting of iOS games to the Android 4.2 based system.

The GamePop Mini goes up for pre-order on Monday, July 1st. Don?t forget that the full-sized GamePop is still up for pre-order and if you reserve yours by the end of the weekend, that too will be free (regularly priced at $129).

Keillor plans 26-city 'Radio Romance Tour'

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Humorist Garrison Keillor won't be taking a summer vacation.

Instead, the creator and host of "A Prairie Home Companion" kicks off a 26-city "Radio Romance Tour 2013" next month.

Keillor wraps up the current season of his popular public radio variety show on Saturday from Tanglewood in Massachusetts. Then he's launching his coast-to-coast bus tour July 8 in Spokane, Wash.

Keillor plans 27 concerts, from Washington state to Maine. The shows will not be broadcast.

Keillor will be joined by comedian Fred Newman, who does sound effects, and pianist Richard Dworsky and the Guy's All-Star Shoe Band featuring guitarist Pat Donohue and violinist and mandolinist Richard Kriehn. The shows will run more than two hours and will offer duet singing, with either singer Aoife O'Donovan or singer and fiddle player Sara Watkins.

There also will be such "Prairie Home" staples, as commercials for fake sponsors, like Powdermilk Biscuits, Guy Noir Private Eye and the latest News from Lake Wobegon.

"The summer tour is a show that I carpenter together from things that I remember liking a lot over ... the last 20 years or so, and piecing these all together" Keillor told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Thursday.

Keillor said that during intermissions, he and either O'Donovan or Watkins, depending on the date, will stroll into the audience with hand-held microphones to sing duets.

"Some people sing with us and other people just go to the toilet," Keillor said.

Keillor has done previous summer tours and said he likes the activity.

"Sitting on the porch with a lemonade is a very nice idea. But what will I do on the porch after 15 minutes that is less interesting?" he said.

The tour wraps up Aug. 6 in Interlochen, Mich., the day before Keillor's 71st birthday. The next season of "Prairie Home" opens in mid-September at the Fitzgerald Theater in downtown St. Paul.

"A Prairie Home Companion" draws more than 4 million listeners on more than 600 public radio stations each week. The show celebrates its 40 anniversary next year.

Fears of more unrest as rival protesters mass in Egypt | Morocco ...

CAIRO, June 28, 2013 (AFP)

Supporters and opponents of Egyptian Islamist President Mohamed Morsi took to the streets on Friday for rival protests a year after his election, as clashes in Alexandria raised fears of widespread unrest.

Fervent displays of emotion on both sides underline the bitter divisions in Egypt, with Morsi?s opponents accusing him of hijacking the revolution and his supporters vowing to defend his legitimacy to the end.

Violence between Morsi supporters and opponents in Egypt?s second city of Alexandria injured at least 10 people, a security official told AFP.

Television footage showed protesters running in several directions in Alexandria?s Sidi Gaber area as gunshots were heard.

At least four people have died since Wednesday in clashes in the Nile Delta ? three in the city of Mansura and one in Zagazig, medics said.

Overnight violence erupted in the eastern part of the Nile Delta, north of the capital, Morsi?s own home province of Sharqiya.

The unrest is seen by many as a prelude to mass anti-Morsi protests planned for Sunday.

In Cairo, thousands of Islamists gathered under the slogan ?legitimacy is a red line?, in reference to Morsi?s insistence that he has a popular mandate.

?People must go with everything they?ve got to defend legitimacy and Egypt,? one speaker told the cheering crowd, but also urging them to keep their protests peaceful.

Meanwhile, anti-Morsi protesters joined hundreds camped overnight in Tahrir Square, epicentre of the 2011 revolt that toppled Hosni Mubarak and catapulted Morsi to the presidency.

Thousands more anti-Morsi protesters demonstrated across Cairo including in the Shubra, Sayeda Zeinab and Mohandesseen districts.

Outside the capital, his opponents gathered in Alexandria, Mansura and the canal city of Port Said.

The June 30 protest was called by Tamarod (Arabic for Rebellion), a grassroots movement which says it has more than 15 million signatures for a petition demanding Morsi?s resignation and a snap election.

The broad-based opposition alleges that Morsi reneged on his promise to be a president for all Egyptians and has failed to deliver on the uprising?s aspirations for freedom and social justice.

Germany warned that Egypt?s fledgling democracy faces a ?moment of truth?, and urged Morsi to implement reforms.

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said demonstrators had a right to peaceful assembly, but urged both sides to avoid bloodshed.

Westerwelle ?is deeply concerned about the current escalation in political tensions in Egypt,? his spokesman told reporters.

?This is in his view a key moment of truth for political change in Egypt.?

Morsi himself warned in a televised speech on Wednesday that the growing polarisation threatens to ?paralyse? the country.

He pledged to consider constitutional reforms and appealed to the opposition to join talks.

It was his latest attempt to strike up a dialogue between political factions in a country deeply split between his Islamist allies and an opposition of leftists, liberals, Christians and some Muslim groups.

Late on Thursday, however, the opposition National Salvation Front coalition rejected his offer of talks and renewed its call for a snap presidential election.

Since taking office last June 30, Morsi has squared off against the judiciary, media, police and even artists.

But he has also admitted to failings and vowed to correct them.? ?I have made many mistakes, there is no question. Mistakes can happen, but they need to be corrected,? he said.

He also warned the media against abusing freedoms won in the uprising.? Judges on Thursday slapped a travel ban on Mohammed al-Amin, the owner of private television channel CBC that hosts a popular satire show. He faces charges of tax evasion.

In Wednesday?s speech, Morsi named him and several other private television channel owners.

The army, which oversaw the transition from Mubarak?s autocratic rule but has been on the sidelines since Morsi?s election, warned it would intervene if violence erupts.

It has brought in reinforcements to key cities, security officials said.? In Cairo, residents were withdrawing cash and stocking up on food, and many companies plan to close on Sunday, the first day of the working week.

Fuel shortages have seen drivers queueing outside petrol stations through the night, bringing parts of Cairo to a standstill.

Accused Boston Marathon bomber indicted by jury

By Scott Malone

BOSTON (Reuters) - A U.S. grand jury has indicted accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhohkhar Tsarnaev on charges of killing four people and using homemade bombs, federal prosecutors in Boston said on Thursday.

Tsarnaev, 19, is one of two ethnic Chechen brothers accused of carrying out the April 15 attack, which killed three people. A fourth victim, a university police officer, died in a gunfight with the pair four days later as authorities raced to capture them.

The indictment includes 30 criminal counts, with 19 of those counts carrying the possibility of the death penalty.

The pair were accused of setting off two homemade pressure-cooker bombs amid a crowd of thousands of people at the race's finish line. They lay low for three days after the attack until the FBI on April 18 released photos of the suspects, hoping that the public could identify them.

That night they set out with five improvised explosive devices, a semiautomatic handgun, ammunition, a hunting knife and a machete.

The pair used those weapons in a battle with police in Watertown, Massachusetts, outside Boston, and Dzhokhar ran over his 26-year-old brother, Tamerlan, with a car in the escape, officials said.

The younger Tsarnaev, who was badly injured in that gun battle, has been held in a prison hospital west of Boston since his capture on April 19.

98% Before Midnight

All Critics (146) | Top Critics (38) | Fresh (143) | Rotten (3)

Hawke and Delpy remain as charming as ever, and their combined goofiness is more endearing than annoying.

Love is messy here, life cannot be controlled, satisfaction is far from guaranteed. Romance is rocky at best. But romance still is.

Though "Before Midnight" is often uncomfortable to watch, it's never less than mesmerizing - and ultimately, a joy to walk with this prickly but fascinating couple again.

"Before Midnight" is heartbreaking, but not because of Jesse and Celine. It's the filmmakers' passions that seem to have cooled.

Before Midnight is fascinating to watch, and so long as Celine and Jesse are communicating, there's still hope.

How (Jesse and Celine) try to rekindle that flame is what drives Midnight, a film that feels so authentic it's like overhearing a conversation you're not sure you should be hearing.

Loving words mix with personal attacks, the magic moments with the unintended slights, as we witness the occasional desperation of imperfect people doing the best they can when life moves beyond meet-cute and courtship. That's authentic.

Linklater and his players bring an end to the fantasy and welcome the thrilling ups and bitter downs of reality to this love story.

Like the first two films, it reflects the real world in a way that seems almost preternatural. It's just that, here, the real world is a harsher, more disappointing place.

The duo, clearly so comfortable in their characters' skin, indulge in intelligent banter, sharp humour and emotional truths.

So much better written than contemporary novels, this film is a literary as well as cinematic achievement to cherish. For grown-ups.

As before, it's often very funny, with Jesse and Celine swapping Woody Allen-esque one-liners - nicely snarky, appealingly abrasive.

The acting, the dialogue and direction are superb.

None of the films is faultless in itself, but, tinted with complementary tones, the complete cycle comes as close to perfection as any trilogy in cinema history.

Marvelous. It's impossible to shake the feeling that we are merely eavesdropping on reality. Witty, wise, and -- most important of all -- truly romantic in ways that movies usually aren't.

It's been 18 years since Hawke, Delpy and Linklater introduced us to Jesse and Celine, and their story just gets richer, funnier and more punchy each time we see them. In 1995's Before Sunrise, they were idealistic 23-year-olds.

Hawke and Delpy are as believably real as any screen couple can ever be.

This is one of the few sequels for which the cliche 'eagerly awaited' is truly applicable.

Predictably, it's just as great as the first two.

By the end, Before Midnight inches towards a dawn of charm. But it's a troubled trip.

As an organic experiment in collaboration between actors and director, it is a triumph, co-created and co-owned by Delpy, Linklater and Hawke.

Hawke and Delpy, who are both credited on the script too, have never found co-stars to bounce off more nimbly or bring out richer nuances in their acting.

The performances and dialogue are wonderfully naturalistic; a reminder that the best special effects are often the cheapest.

Before Midnight is about the nature of long-term relationships, and the way love deepens and grows but also finds itself subject to the complications of maturity. Smart, insightful, and poignant.

For those who witnessed Jesse and Celine's tentative getting together as inter railing students almost twenty years ago, it's reassuring to see them still in love.

Brilliantly directed, superbly written and impeccably acted, this is a thoroughly enjoyable, thought-provoking and emotionally engaging drama that perfectly complements the previous two films.

The Jones family jewelry box includes a Super Bowl ring and UFC championship belt (Photo)

Plenty of families have jewelry that is special to them. I have a pearl and sapphire ring that belonged to my grandmother that means the world to me. However, when you're a member of the Jones family, that jewelry is just a bit different.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has a gold-encrusted belt for being the champ. His brother Arthur is a member of the Super Bowl-winning Baltimore Ravens, and he received his ring earlier this month. Jon displayed the two pieces together on his Instagram account. Jon's younger brother, Chandler, is a member of the New England Patriots, so there's a good chance this jewelry collection could grow soon.

(AP) ? The United States won't be scrambling military jets or engaging in high-level diplomatic bartering to get National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden extradited to the U.S., President Barack Obama said Thursday.

Dismissing him as "a 29-year-old hacker," Obama sought to downplay the international chase for Snowden, lowering the temperature of an issue that has already raised tensions between the U.S. and uneasy partners Russia and China.

Obama said the damage to U.S. national security has already been done and his top focus now is making sure it can't happen again.

"I'm not going to have one case with a suspect who we're trying to extradite suddenly be elevated to the point where I've got to start doing wheeling and dealing and trading on a whole host of other issues, simply to get a guy extradited so he can face the justice system," Obama said at a joint news conference with Senegal's President Macky Sall.

Snowden turned 30 last week. He was working as a government contractor with security clearance when he seized the NSA documents.

Snowden's intercontinental efforts to shirk U.S. authorities ? taking him from a hotel hideout in Hong Kong to an airport transit zone in Moscow, where he's believed to be holed up ? has already undercut Obama's efforts to strengthen ties with China and threatened to worsen tensions with Russia just as Obama is seeking Moscow's cooperation on Syria. At the same time, Snowden's attempts to seek asylum from Ecuador and other nations have underscored Obama's limited sway in a number of foreign capitals.

Obama said he hadn't personally called either Russian President Vladimir Putin or Chinese President Xi Jinping to request their cooperation.

"I shouldn't have to," he declared.

Obama said such matters are routinely dealt with at a law-enforcement level, calling Snowden's extradition "not exceptional from a legal perspective." He said the U.S. has a wide-ranging economic relationship with China that shouldn't be dwarfed by the hunt for one fugitive, and that the U.S. has had "useful conversations" with Moscow over efforts to return Snowden to the U.S. Putin has called Snowden a "free man" and refused to turn him over to Washington.

"My continued expectation is that Russia or other countries that have talked about potentially providing Mr. Snowden asylum recognize that they are a part of an international community and they should be abiding by international law," Obama said, noting that the U.S. doesn't have a formal extradition treaty with Russia.

Snowden has acknowledged seizing highly classified documents about U.S. surveillance programs that collect vast amounts of U.S. phone and Internet records. He shared the information with The Guardian and Washington Post newspapers. He also told the South China Morning Post that the NSA hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal text message data. The Senate Intelligence Committee chairwoman, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, has said Snowden still has perhaps more than 200 sensitive documents.

"I get why it's a fascinating story," Obama said. "I'm sure there will be a made-for-TV movie somewhere down the line."

The White House has said Hong Kong's refusal to detain Snowden has "unquestionably" hurt U.S. relations with China. After Hong Kong's government claimed it had to allow Snowden to flee because the U.S. got Snowden's middle name wrong in documents requesting his arrest, Obama's Justice Department said the U.S. didn't buy that excuse, calling it "a pretext for not acting."

The Hong Kong government had also previously mentioned that it asked the U.S. for more information on NSA's hacking of targets in Hong Kong, suggesting the issue played some role in its decision.

Obama said the fact Snowden walked off with so many secret documents shows significant vulnerabilities at the NSA that must be solved. But Obama said he's also focused on fostering a "healthy effective debate" about the balance between security and privacy in America.

"In terms of U.S. interests, the damage was done with respect to the initial leaks," Obama said.

Obama's comment came on the first full day of a weeklong, 3-country trip to Africa, his first major tour of sub-Saharan Africa since he took office more than four years ago.

Home-cooking lures Palestinian expat home

With everything from chickens and rabbits to cashews and apricots out back, Mazen Saadeh is part restaurateur, part survivalist.

?I think the world is going very fast to hell and I want to be safe and find something to eat when the shelves will be empty,? says Mr. Saadeh, a Palestinian novelist and filmmaker who lived in Vienna, Paris, and Iowa before returning home to the West Bank several years ago. ?If any war happens between the US and any countries, or Israel and Iran, it means the price of bread [will be] minimum $100.?

Then he adds that he doesn?t like bread.

That?s a pity, because the crusty loaves that come out of his outdoor oven and are served up on the porch of his renovated 1944 farmhouse are as delicious as the sunset colors that spread out over the valley below.

Inside, blinking red Christmas lights adorn the main dining space, which is further furnished with a guitar, poster of Hugo Ch?vez, accordion, chess set, and an African drum.

He hadn?t been planning on coming back here; he and his wife, Julia, had found an old house in Portland, Ore., and were planning on converting it into a weekend restaurant. But at the last minute he felt the pull of his native land. He told her, ?No, khalas [enough], let?s go back to Palestine.?

The mayor of Bir Zeit, a university town near Ramallah, offered him a restaurant property he couldn?t refuse. But Julia apparently didn?t feel the same draw.

?So now she is making wine in Portland and I am making wine in the West Bank,? he says matter-of-factly, fiddling with his Apple computer.

Business was so great in Bir Zeit that he decided to open a second restaurant here in Beit Jala. But the drive between the two properties, which would take 45 minutes or less if he were allowed to drive on Israeli roads, consumes two hours each way and it became untenable to manage both properties. So he shut down the Bir Zeit restaurant, his ?favorite baby,? and is now putting everything into this property, where he has established a Palestinian-style locavore restaurant. He has seven employees, all university students ? ?now there are seven families [making a] living,? he says ? and a handful of volunteers that come from as far away as Hungary.

As the last rays of sunlight grace the tops of his fruit and olive trees, he heads outside and pads down the rocky path, bending over his peas and tomatoes, and wagging a finger at the small swimming pool that he is renovating for carp ? right next to a larger one that local elders remember using as kids.

Evening prayers echo across the valley, mingling with the sound of silverware tinkling in the outdoor kitchen as the minutiae of daily life makes itself heard amid the strains of religion and politics in this storied land.

(AP) ? The world's first space conversation experiment between a robot and humans is ready to be launched.

Developers from the Kirobo project, named after "kibo" or hope in Japanese and "robot," gathered in Tokyo Wednesday to demonstrate the humanoid robot's ability to talk.

"Russia was the first to go outer space, the U.S. was the first to go to the moon, we want Japan to be the first to send a robot-astronaut to space that can communicate with humans," said Yorichika Nishijima, the Kirobo project manager.

The experiment is a collaboration between advertising and PR company Dentsu Inc., the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo, Robo Garage and Toyota Motor Corp.

Tomotaka Takahashi, CEO of Robo Garage Co. and associate professor at the University of Tokyo, said he hopes robots like Kirobo that hold conversations will eventually be used to assist astronauts working in space.

"When people think of robots in outer space, they tend to seek ones that do things physically," said Takahashi. "But I think there is something that could come from focusing on humanoid robots that focus on communication."

Because Kirobo does not need to perform physical activities, it is smaller than most robots that go into space. Kirobo is about 34 centimeters tall (13 inches) and weighs about 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds).

Its land-based counterpart Mirata looks almost identical but is not designed to go into outer space. Instead, it has the ability to learn through the conversations it has.

During the demonstration, Fuminori Kataoka, project general manager from Toyota, asked Kirobo what its dream was.

"I want to create a future where humans and robots can live together and get along," it answered.

Kirobo is scheduled to be launched from the Tanegashima Space Center on August 4, 2013.

DirecTV GenieGo takes the fight to Sling, brings TV streaming anywhere on PC and iOS

DirecTV GenieGo adds live streaming anywhere on PC and iOS, takes on Sling directly

DirecTV recently switched the name of its Nomad transcoding device to GenieGo to match its new DVRs, a change we first noticed on its Android app. On Windows PC and iOS the apps are about to get a new update that changes the name and lets users stream video from their DVRs over WiFi even when they're away from home (Mac and Android support is due later in the year.) Previously, it allowed users to stream live and recorded TV, or download recorded TV to a mobile device for viewing offline, but Slingbox-style streaming of live or recorded TV anywhere is new, and brings it closer to the device we thought it could be when it launched. Solid Signal and DBSTalk report the incoming update (not live yet, but it should pop up tomorrow) is easy to use, letting users stream recordings, start a recording so it can stream or remotely setting up the transcoder to make a mobile copy users can download once they get home. Satellite TV competitor Dish has brought deeper integration of Sling into its new Hopper DVRs, and now DirecTV has its own in-house solution, anyone thinking of switching sides?

Ouya looks to make a dent in game console market

NEW YORK (AP) ? Ouya, maker of a bite-sized game console that runs Google's Android operating system, wants to take a bite out the video game triumvirate of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo.

The console, which went on sale Tuesday for $100, lets players try games for free before buying them, a selling point Ouya (pronounced oo-yah) CEO Julie Uhrman often makes to underscore that gamers who use consoles made by "the big three" can't test games before they spend as much as $60 to purchase them.

"We are definitely disrupting the console market," Uhrman says. "I mean, there's been no startup that has had a meaningful impact on the market in decades, and we're the first. We offer something different."

So far, Ouya's pitch seems to be working. The underdog console had sold out on Amazon.com and on Target's website by Tuesday afternoon. It is available at other outlets, including Best Buy and GameStop.

The Ouya game cube measures about 3 inches on each side and hooks up to a TV set. The console comes with a single controller. Additional controllers cost $50.

There are nearly 180 games available for Ouya, ranging from the likes of "Crazy Cat Lady" to the more established "Final Fantasy III" from Square Enix. The company says more games are on the way. There are also some non-gaming apps, such as online music service TuneIn Radio.

The games are sold through Ouya's storefront, not Google Play, the app store where people buy games for Android tablets and mobile devices. Pricing is left up to individual game developers; many games are in the single digits. "Final Fantasy" is an exception at $16. Ouya takes a 30 percent cut from the game developers.

While you won't find "Grand Theft Auto IV" or the latest "Call of Duty" among the available titles, there are plenty of others from independent developers whose games may never make it onto the dominant consoles, Microsoft's Xbox, Sony's PlayStation and Nintendo's Wii.

"I don't think it's ever really going to challenge the big three, but it offers a lot to the more casual gamer," says Anthony Yacullo, a self-described "gadget geek" from Lawrenceville, N.J. Like thousands of other gamers and game developers, Yacullo already has an Ouya. He contributed at least $95 to the company through crowdfunding website, Kickstarter.

"When I'm out on the road for work and come home, I don't want to play 'Call of Duty," he says. Rather, Yacullo says he looks for games more like the ones on his phone ? except he doesn't want to be staring at his phone.

That's where Ouya comes in. Still, the new console is unlikely to present a serious challenge to high-end consoles coming out from Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. later this year. Ouya lacks recent blockbuster games with high-end graphics. But at a fraction of the price (the Xbox One will cost $500 and the PlayStation 4, $400), it appeals to budget-conscious gamers, gadget geeks and those looking for an alternative to gaming power-trio.

Gartner analyst Brian Blau says the measure of Ouya's success will not be the number of consoles it sells but the amount of money game developers make ?and whether there is a steady stream of new games for the device. What's missing now, he adds, is the big-name video game brands such as Activision and Electronic Arts supporting Ouya.

That could come later.

The project to build the Ouya console launched on Kickstarter last July. On Aug. 9, 2012, Ouya's funding period ended with $8.6 million pledged, more than nine times the original $950,000 goal its creators had set. More than 63,000 people donated, with 12 pledging $10,000 or more.

"We brought it to Kickstarter because we wanted to know if anybody really wanted this," Uhrman says. "We had talked with developers and industry veterans like (video game designer) Brian Fargo and Ed Fries, who is one of the founders, basically, of Xbox, and there was a general feeling that there was a void in the market place for soemthing. But we wanted to validate it."

This May, Santa Monica, Calif.-based Ouya received another $15 million in venture capital funding from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, other VC firms, and chip maker Nvidia.

Ouya is not the first independent game console to attempt a challenge to the big three console makers. Four years ago, a startup called OnLive launched, offering games streamed over an Internet connection, similar to the way Netflix offers streamed movies and TV shows. OnLive's small game consoles went on sale for $99 in 2010, but they never gained broad appeal or even made a dent in the traditional console market.

Another early backer, Pedro Amador-Gates, thinks Ouya should "not even go after the consoles," but rather appeal to hobbyists and do-it-yourself folks.

"This is like a baby system compared to an about-to-be upgraded gaming system," he says, referring to the Xbox one and the PS4. But, much like it was with the early cell phone games, "it will only get better."
