Kordelia has been very interested in planting and growing in our own garden this year and so instead of all the muss and fuss of doing a party at our house, we headed out to Suzie's Organic Farm here in San Diego.
We had the most amazing and patient docent who lead us on a harvesting tour of the farm. The party goers were outfitted with reusable bags (that became their goodie bags) which were filled with delicious organic produce by the end of the tour. We almost lost some toddlers to the strawberry patch...come to think of it; we almost lost some adults so yummy were those berries.
After the tour we had a picnic at one of the sunken tables that the farmers usually use for lunch. I packed baskets with vegetarian sandwiches (caprese or granny smith apple and brie), Italian soda and water. We used our everyday dishes from home, cloth napkins and real glasses which not only kept our waste to a minimum but were a nice counterpoint to the dirt under our nails. It was a lovely day and one guest exclaimed, "I want my birthday party here." One of the best parts? Clean-up was loading the dishwasher and rinsing off beautiful turnips, carrots and kale for dinner.
