Detroit - A 15-year-old charged in the attempted robbery of a basketball coach at Martin Luther King Jr. High School will appear before a judge next month.
The teen will remain in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center and is charged with one count of armed robbery and one count of assault with intent to rob while armed. The teen appeared for a preliminary hearing at the detention center Saturday morning, where his bond was set at $50,000.
He and his guardian waived their right to a preliminary trial. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.
The prosecution asked for a large bond because he has had 10 previous run-ins with the detention center, most for truancy, although he was held at the center in 2010 after he brought a weapon in a school zone. He also tested positive for marijuana use when he entered the center this time.
The teen and 16-year-old Michael Scott allegedly attempted to rob Earnest Robinson, the school's girls' basketball coach, as he walked to his car in the school parking lot with two players at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1.
Scott allegedly held up a handgun while the teen tugged at a chain Robinson was wearing, the Prosecutor's Office said. At the same time, the armed teen pointed his weapon at two females who were on the passenger side of their coach's car, authorities said. The gunman ordered the girls to leave; they ran away unharmed.
Robinson, who is a Detroit police reserve officer with a concealed pistol license, pulled out his weapon and fired at both teens, killing the 16-year-old and wounding the 15-year-old.
The 15-year-old will appear at 9 a.m. March 1 before Judge Christopher Dingell for a preliminary hearing.
He has been given an adult designation, which gives the judge three options if he is convicted: Sentence him as a juvenile, have a blended sentence as juvenile and adult, or sentence the juvenile as an adult.
Prosecutors want him tried as an adult.
