Fidel Castro's niece to get gay rights award in Philly

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? The daughter of Cuban President Raul Castro will be allowed to travel to Philadelphia to accept an award for her gay rights advocacy, officials said Tuesday, reversing a previous decision to reject her visa request.

Mariela Castro will attend the Equality Forum's annual conference on civil rights for lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender people, according to Malcolm Lazin, the advocacy group's executive director.

Lazin, who had blasted the State Department's travel denial last week, said organizers are "delighted" at the change of heart.

"She is unquestionably the leader for progressive change for the LGBT community in Cuba," Lazin said Tuesday. "Her accomplishments are nothing short of remarkable."

A U.S. official confirmed that Castro has been authorized to go to the event. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because visa records are confidential.

High-ranking Cuban government officials and Communist Party members cannot enter the U.S. without special dispensation. But Cuban academics, scientists and entertainers are finding it easier to visit because President Barack Obama's administration has relaxed travel restrictions.

Castro, a married mother of three, is the niece of retired Cuban strongman Fidel Castro. She is also the director of Cuba's National Center for Sex Education, part of Cuba's public health ministry, and is the country's most prominent gay rights activist.

Castro has instituted awareness campaigns, trained police on relations with the LGBT community and lobbied lawmakers to legalize same-sex unions. She was elected as a deputy in Cuba's parliament in February.

On Saturday in Philadelphia, she will speak about her experiences and receive an award from the Equality Forum.

Lazin said that Castro had accepted the group's invitation months ago and that he was surprised by the initial visa denial because she had been allowed to attend an academic conference in San Francisco last year.

But some Cuban-American lawmakers blasted that decision, calling Castro a shill for her family's Communist dictatorship. At the time, Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., called her "a vociferous advocate of the regime and opponent of democracy."

Menendez was traveling in Central America on Tuesday and was unavailable for comment, a spokesman said.

Michelle Malkin | CNN legal analyst: Gosnell media blackout a ...

**Written by Doug Powers

Talk to a lot of mainstream reporters and they?ll often lament how the corporate ?bottom line? too often dictates what they are and aren?t able to report. However, as CNN?s legal analyst demonstrated, the ?business decisions? excuse can provide the media convenient, albeit laughably weak, cover:

ANDERSON COOPER: Joe, you have been in the courtroom. You have been following this trial. David, obviously, you picked up on this a long time ago. There?s been a lot of criticism of mainstream media, Jeff, for not covering this in the same way they covered the Jodi Arias trial or, you know, it?s not front page news in a lot of places. This is the first night we are covering it. Why do you think that is, that it hasn?t received the kind of front page coverage of it?

JEFFREY TOOBIN, CNN senior legal analyst: Well, the people making those criticisms by and large are conservatives, who are saying the liberal media is trying to protect abortion rights by not showing this horror show. I don?t buy that at all. You know, I think, I can only speak for CNN, and my knowledge of sort of this part of the media, the New Yorker where I work, I have some sense of, you know, mainstream New York Times. They don?t cover a story, it?s a business decision. We are not operating with a political agenda here. We pick stories, by and large, for reasons that we think people will be interested. I don?t think we?re covering this up. So, I just think that?s a way of trying to ginning up their supporters.

The trial of somebody who murdered babies and maimed women isn?t a story people are interested in? For a while, CNN opted for better business decisions resulting in stories that would reel in a much larger share of news consumers, such as Mark Sanford?s ?soap opera? and the ?North Pond hermit? thief in Maine.

Related: And after all CNN has done for him, this is how President Obama thanks them?

Update: Erick emails bit of perspective on why Toobin might want to avoid the subject.

'Iron Man 3' rules world, 'Pain & Gain' takes US

(AP) ? "Iron Man 3" was the heavy-lifter at theaters with a colossal overseas debut that overshadowed a gang of mercenary bodybuilders in a sleepy pre-summer weekend at the domestic box office.

The Marvel Studios superhero sequel starring Robert Downey Jr. got a head-start on its domestic launch next Friday with a $195.3 million opening in 42 overseas markets, distributor Disney reported Sunday.

That topped the $185.1 million start for Marvel's "The Avengers," which opened in 39 markets over the same weekend last year a week ahead of its record-breaking domestic debut of $207.4 million.

"You don't know that you could ever repeat the kind of experience we had a year ago, and here the Marvel team brought together another incredible movie," said Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney. "We've had this as a pattern for Marvel films to kind of let momentum internationally help signal to the domestic audience that the film is coming, something big is coming."

Director Michael Bay's "Pain & Gain," a true-crime tale of bodybuilders on the make, muscled into first-place domestically with a $20 million debut.

The Paramount release starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie knocked off Tom Cruise's sci-fi adventure "Oblivion" after a week in the No. 1 spot. Universal's "Oblivion" slipped to second-place with $17.4 million, raising its domestic total to $64.7 million.

Lionsgate's all-star nuptial comedy "The Big Wedding" tanked at No. 4 with just $7.5 million. The ensemble cast includes Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Robin Williams, Susan Sarandon and Katherine Heigl, but the movie was almost universally trashed by critics and held little interest for audiences.

Paramount, which distributed the earlier "Iron Man" movies and still has a financial stake in the comic-book flicks after Disney bought Marvel, had a small-scale success with "Pain & Gain."

A passion project for Bay, who has made Paramount a fortune with his "Transformers" franchise, "Pain & Gain" was shot for a modest $26 million, spare change compared to the director's usual budgets.

The movie has the director taking a breather from his usual sci-fi action spectacles for a story based on a kidnapping-extortion caper carried out by bodybuilders in the 1990s. Yet "Pain & Gain" still has Bay's usual visual flair, and the reviews generally were better than what he's used to.

"With that kind of budget, to open to $20 million the first weekend is a very strong opening," said Don Harris, Paramount's head of distribution. "You see what a director really in his prime, at the top of his game, can do with a small budget, what he can make a movie look like."

"Oblivion" was down a fairly steep 53 percent from the movie's $37.1 million domestic debut the previous weekend.

Overseas, "Oblivion" took in $12.8 million to lift its international haul to $134.1 million and worldwide total to just under $200 million.

Hollywood's domestic downturn continued, with revenues totaling $90 million, off 18.5 percent from the same weekend last year, when "Think Like a Man" led with $17.6 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Receipts have trailed 2012's for most of the year, with 2013 domestic ticket sales running at $2.9 billion, nearly 12 percent behind last year's.

That pattern could continue as Hollywood opens its summer season domestically this coming weekend. Despite a huge haul expected for "Iron Man 3," the film will be competing against that gigantic start over the same weekend last year for "The Avengers," the only movie to open with more than $200 million domestically.

"Iron Man 2" debuted with $128.1 million over the first weekend in May 2010. Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian has been pegging the "Iron Man 3" potential at $125 million-plus, though the mammoth international start could fire up domestic prospects even higher.

"This ups the ante in a big way for "Iron Man 3," Dergarabedian said. "It just raises the profile of the film. It raises expectations. But to expect something in the realm of $207.4 million? Well, the fact that we're even talking about it is really amazing."

Said Disney's Hollis: "I wouldn't even want to get ahead of ourselves on something like that. But to say we're encouraged by the results this weekend would be a gross understatement."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Pain & Gain," $20 million.

2. "Oblivion," $17.4 million ($12.8 million international).

3. "42," $10.7 million.

4. "The Big Wedding," $7.5 million.

8. "Olympus Has Fallen," $2.8 million ($4.2 million international).

9. "The Place Beyond the Pines," $2.7 million ($1.1 million international).

10. "Jurassic Park" in 3-D, $2.3 million ($410,000 international).

3. "Oblivion," $12.8 million.

4. "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," $10.2 million.

Two bizarre endings mar UFC 159 prelims

The UFC debut of two Strikeforce light heavyweights was spoiled by a odd ending. Ovince St-Preux beat Gian Villante in a majority technical decision after the fight was stopped because of a poke to the eye.

After a back-and-forth, but not entirely thrilling bout, St-Preux threw a punch and accidentally poked Villante in the eye. Villante stepped back and crouched down, indicating to referee Kevin Mulhall that there was a problem with the eye. Mulhall asked Villante if he could see, and Villante said no, he couldn't see.

At that point, Mulhall waved his arms and the fight was stopped. Villante protested, but the fight was over. Because the round had started, it had to be judged. The scores were 30-28, 29-28 and 29-29 in St-Preux's favor.

?I couldn?t see. He did poke me in the eye so I don?t know," Villante said after the fight. "He said the fight was over and I didn?t expect that because I was just reacting to his question. I got poked and my eye was closed up so I thought he would stop it but he didn?t, he just kind of looked at me. I don?t understand how you score thirty seconds of a round and that?s how I lost? We were just getting going and I got poked in the eye. I don?t know what to say.?

Mulhall's stoppage adhered to the eyepoke rule, if not literally, then in spirit. When a fighter says he can't see, the fight is stopped. However, Mulhall could have used better communication and followed procedures. It would have been better if he explained to Villante that he didn't have time to recover and that the fight would be stopped if he said he couldn't see.

UFC 159's weird streak continued in the very next bout. Rustam Khabilov and Yancy Medeiros' fight was stopped halfway through the first round. Medeiros defended a Khabilov takedown attempt, but hit his hand awkwardly. His thumb ended up pointing a way thumbs are not supposed to point and the bout was stopped at 2:32 of the first round.

Two weird endings marred the preliminary card, but the UFC rarely lets a weird ending go. Quite often, these fights get a rematch, so don't be shocked if you see these fights happen again on a card this summer.

Speedy fix for FAA sequester woes

By Doug Palmer and Richard Cowan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives is expected to act quickly on Friday to finalize a Senate plan to ease nationwide air-traffic delays caused by last month's automatic federal spending cuts.

The Senate plan, passed unanimously late Thursday, will give the Department of Transportation flexibility to use unspent funds to cover the costs of air traffic controllers and other essential employees at the Federal Aviation Administration who had been furloughed.

Lawmakers were eager to act quickly since many would be scrambling to catch flights home and to other destinations at the start of a weeklong recess.

They also sought to avoid the growing wrath of the traveling public, which had dealt with significant take-off and landing delays since the furloughs started on Sunday.

The legislative action marks a surprising bipartisan effort, especially after many Republicans had blamed the Obama administration for manipulating funds to maximize the impact of the budget cuts, in a perceived bid to damage Republicans.

It does come with the risk, though, of unleashing furious lobbying campaigns to ease other program cuts triggered by the controversial "sequestration" that took effect on March 1, requiring across-the-board spending cuts among most federal agencies.

The White House on Friday welcomed Congress' move, but said it falls short of broader action needed to address sequestration.

"It will be good news for America's traveling public if Congress spares them these unnecessary delays," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement.

Carney said lawmakers need to take additional steps to alleviate the impact felt beyond the airline industry from the cuts, such as among poorer elderly people, defense industry workers and others brought on by sequestration.

"Ultimately, this is no more than a temporary Band-Aid that fails to address the overarching threat to our economy posed by the sequester's mindless across-the-board cuts," he said.

Transportation officials have made other cuts to their budget but furloughs of air traffic controllers began this week, prompting traveler backlash at major hubs like those in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta.

On Friday morning, departing flights at Newark Liberty International Airport were delayed more than an hour and 15 minutes, and Boston's Logan Airport had departure delays of more than 30 minutes, both due to staffing, the FAA said. Teterboro airport in New Jersey, which handles many corporate jets, also was experiencing delays of more than 90 minutes due to staffing.

Beauty Of Al-hana Mosque - ArticleSnatch.com

One of the best ways to understand a country's culture is through its architecture, especially a religious building. Similar to churches you visit in Europe, the mosque is a highly attractive place to be when you are in a Malaysia. The Al-Hana Mosque is considered to be largest and most popular mosque in Langkawi Island. You will find this mosque fairly interesting as it holds a respectable history in the island: Malaysia's first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman was the person who opened this grand peach-and-gold mosque in 1959. The mosque is conveniently situated in Kuah Town. Kuah, which means gravy in Malay Language, possess many facilities as well as attractions, making it a convenient and friendly place to visit despite the lack of beach and night spots. You will find Al-Hana Mosque easily located as it is just next to the Tourism Information office.

The Islamic architecture of this magnificent mosque is definitely impressive. Besides the gilded main dome, there are several smaller peach-colored domes surrounding it. The interior of Al-Hana Mosque is beautifully and carefully designed. It incorporates motifs and carvings of selected verses from the Al-Quran around the walls and fittings of the main prayer hall. Aside from that, there is a wooden minibar which is elaborately carved which serves as a pulpit in the mosque where the Imam (leader of prayer) stands to deliver sermons. All and all, you can absolutely see the infusion of Uzbekistan along with the local traditional Malay elements. The tranquility and serene atmosphere that hangs above the mosque is only broken by the Azan (the call of perform prayers) in the evenings and you will be able to experience the greatness of the mosque.

If you are visiting the mosque during Friday in the afternoon, you will be able to experience one of the main cultures in Malaysia where the Muslim men go about with their Friday Prayers. However, be aware of what you dress. As a responsible traveler, it is important, especially for the women, to wear clothing that is appropriate as you are entering religious ground. Sleeves shirt and short skirts or pants are prohibited there. Do educate yourself about the destination and knowledgeable with the local customs. This will definitely make your travel easier and enrich your experience. Additionally, you have to be aware of people's sensitivity to being photographed. If you want to take pictures of the Muslim while they are praying, you should ask for their permission first. Since you are in a different country, you should engage yourself in the local culture. Take it as a unique opportunity to explore a new culture and see the world in a different perspective. Of course observing the local customs is fine but you can also ask the locals personally to get more insight about their lives. You are traveling to experience and learn, so do not be shy to ask and learn from others.

The Al-Hana Mosque would truly be an educational trip to learn more about Langkawi's history as well as Malaysian culture. The next time you are in town and start thinking about what to do in Langkawi, this activity should top your list.

What are Banner Ads? | Business is Awesome!

When navigating the Internet, you come across numerous banner ads on any given day. These eye-catching and cleverly devised advertisements consist of an image with an embedded hyperlink that activates when someone clicks on the ad. Once the hyperlink is activated, the web browser reroutes to the advertiser?s website. Online banner advertising uses a bit of HTML code to instruct the web server to navigate to a particular webpage when someone clicks on the image or advertisement and the link is activated.

Go to the Next Level
When you want to get involved in advertising online, banner ads are especially useful tools because they do more than provide information about your company or a particular service or product. They add additional value and act as bridges by taking users directly to your webpage. In addition, a banner ad does not have to be a static advertisement. Unlike traditional print ads, banner ads can present multiple images, messages, and animations while changing appearance and catching the attention of potential customers.

Many Options
Online banner ads come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and options. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to this effective marketing tool. According to the Internet Advertising Bureau, eight different banner sizes exist in accordance with pixel dimensions. These standard banner sizes range from very small 88 pixel by 31 pixel to the most common 486 pixel by 60 pixel ?full banner.? Regardless of your marketing and advertising budget, you can find a banner ad option that works well for your business.

Banner Ads as Marketing Tools
Banner ads are online marketing tools. By targeting an online audience and directing potential customers to a particular website, these advertisements build up traffic and increase the chance of visitors becoming future clients.

Furthermore, banner ads are effective in retargeting visitors who have been exposed to the services and products that your business provides. Perhaps someone will see your ad and click on it but not purchase anything from your site. By remarketing and tracking customers who have previously visited your website, you can use banner ads to redirect people back to your website by placing relevant ads on other web pages. By regularly providing potential customers with opportunities to be redirected to your page, you are generating a number of high-potential business opportunities that will, over time, convert and turn into increased business and higher profits.

Strategic Planning Made Simpler ? Tim Miles ? The Daily Blur

Right above your values ? who you are, how you think, how you see the world ? and your goals in our pyramid-wedge-mountian-hierarchy-of-small-business-except-we-don?t-like-calling-them-small thingie, you?ll find strategic planning.

Strategic planning is simple. That doesn?t mean it?s easy. There?s no magic bullet. There?s no pill you can take to replace hard work.

Let me try and simplify it for you:

1) What are you trying to make happen? Tell me in clear, concrete language. Use no more than three sentences my eight-year-old could understand.

2) What?s in your way? Tell me in the same clear language what?s holding you back. Some of these limiting factors will be known to you. Some won?t. Blind spots can trip up anyone. It helps to have an outside eye, ear, and heart.

3) Once we know what to do, what are we going to do first, second, third? Multi-tasking is a myth that makes you dumber and less efficient. Prioritize the stuff you?re trying to make happen. Delegate.

4) Brainstorm. Don?t let this trip you up.?What if money were no object? How would you solve your problem? Look outside your own business category ? has the HVAC industry already solved a similar problem? What about the amusement park industry? Google ?how to have a better brainstorming session.? And here?s how to double the output of your next session.

5) Do stuff. Go hard in the paint. Work your list.

6) Celebrate your progress with your team.?As I?ve said before, tell me about your last three company parties, and I will tell you about your company.

When we meet with new clients ? using our new, aforementioned good company wedgie thing ? this is also where we consider:

  • Your market size and potential.
  • Your competitors and how good they are and how they?re marketing.
  • Your business model.

Volvo sees signs of upturn after Q1 earnings miss

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - World number two truck maker Volvo posted a surprise rise in orders intake on Thursday amid signs key markets were pulling out of a deep slump that pushed its earnings to a deeper-than-expected fall in the first quarter.

After a year of slumping demand for commercial vehicles, there are tentative signs that activity in the hardest-hit region, Europe, has bottomed out, though only Latin America among major truck markets is yet showing any solid growth.

Volvo, the dominant global player in the industry alongside Germany's Daimler , said order bookings of its trucks rose in several of its key markets to support a group-wide increase of 30 percent compared to the fourth quarter.

"That being said, the second quarter of 2013 will pose a challenge for us and our suppliers, with respect to the changeover to new products and the ramp-up of the industrial system to higher volumes," CEO Olof Persson said in a statement.

The Gothenburg-based company left unchanged its full-year outlook for roughly flat European and North American truck markets this year as well as its forecast for a 20 percent growth in Brazil driven by government subsidies.

The week had already seen cautious optimism spread across the truck industry after Volvo's domestic rival Scania rolled out a 28 percent rise in order intake and Daimler Trucks forecast a slight rise in 2013 sales.

Volvo, which unlike Scania sells into a currently sluggish U.S. market, said order bookings of its trucks rose 11 percent year-on-year in the first quarter compared to the 15 percent fall seen by analysts in a Reuters poll.

But while a recovery may be just over the horizon, for now the slack demand is weighing heavily on truck industry earnings. Volvo said its profit was hit as sales volumes slumped to their lowest level since the height of the 2008/2009 financial crisis.

Volvo, which makes heavy-duty trucks under the Renault, Mack, UD Trucks and Eicher brands as well as its own name, suffered a 92 percent fall in first-quarter operating earnings compared to the 2.02 billion seen in a Reuters poll of analysts.

(AP) ? A cultural war has erupted between Israel's rising political star and his ultra-Orthodox rivals.

Newly minted Finance Minister Yair Lapid, hugely popular for opposing the long-standing preferential treatment enjoyed by the religious minority, is moving swiftly to slash state handouts to large families, compel lifelong seminary students to work and join the army, and remove funding for schools that don't teach math, science and English.

The religious ? labeled "parasites" by one Lapid emissary this week ? are crying foul. But they appear helpless, at least in the short run, to stop Lapid from pressing his agenda.

For most of the last three decades, the country's small ultra-Orthodox minority sat in governing coalitions, securing vast budgets for religious schools and automatic exemptions from mandatory military service for tens of thousands of young men in full-time religious studies.

Tapping into widespread resentment over these expensive perks, Lapid made a strong showing in January elections. His new Yesh Atid, or There is a Future, party finished second in the voting, turning him into the newest star of Israeli politics and propelling him to a senior position in the governing coalition.

The religious parties, meanwhile, were pushed into the opposition.

Lapid, facing a yawning deficit, has moved quickly to drastically slash budgets favoring the ultra-Orthodox.

"I say, let there be war," Lapid said in a speech Wednesday.

According to a draft of planned reforms viewed by The Associated Press, the Finance Ministry has proposed cutting in half government subsidies to religious schools that do not teach a core curriculum including math, science and English, and boosting funding for schools that do. It also seeks to allow subsidies for child day care only if both parents work ? an effort to entice ultra-Orthodox men who study religious texts full time to join the job market.

A parliamentary committee headed by Yesh Atid Cabinet Minister Yaakov Peri also proposes cutting 30 percent of funding to ultra-Orthodox religious seminaries ? roughly $195 million ? and introducing legislation to end most military draft exemptions, Israeli media reported this week.

A spokesman for Peri declined comment, and Boaz Stembler, spokesman of the Finance Ministry, said the draft budget proposal is not final.

Lapid, whose late father led a secular-rights party a decade ago, has said the benefits the ultra-Orthodox have accumulated are unsustainable.

"If hundreds of thousands of healthy people do not work, and live on pensions arranged for them by means of immoral political agreements, then we have sold the interests of the working man, and we must change this," Lapid told a Tel Aviv conference this week.

Lapid sparred with ultra-Orthodox lawmaker Moshe Gafni during a budget debate on Monday, accusing Gafni, who headed the parliament's finance committee in the previous government, of causing the huge deficit.

"You are no longer chairman of the finance committee, because we are fed up with taking orders from you," Lapid said.

Gafni criticized Lapid for issuing statements on Facebook on Saturdays, the Jewish sabbath, when religious Jews refrain from working and using the Internet. Government officials, even those who are not religious, have long refrained from making public statements on the sabbath.

"I don't tell you what to do on the sabbath and you don't tell me what to do on the sabbath," Lapid replied.

He then accused the ultra-Orthodox of encouraging large birth rates in order to take advantage of state child subsidies.

"The body that is responsible for funding children is called their parents," he said.

Lapid's deputy, Mickey Levy, appeared on an ultra-Orthodox radio station on Wednesday in hopes of smoothing over relations with the religious. But when the interview became tense, Levy called ultra-Orthodox Jews "parasites."

Levy immediately apologized and said he had suffered a slip of the tongue in a heated moment.

Israel's mainstream media has largely supported Lapid, a former newspaper columnist and TV talk show host.

"How long have we waited for a finance minister in the Israeli government to stand up and tell those dignified parliament members that they no longer hold the reins to the state of Israel," Yael Paz-Melamed wrote in the daily Maariv. A Haaretz editorial cartoon depicted ultra-Orthodox lawmakers bandaged and bruised from the political browbeating.

Religious lawmakers accused Lapid of inciting against them.

"Since the January elections, new politics have brought unprecedented displays of hatred and polarization," Arieh Deri, leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas Party, wrote in the Yediot Ahronot newspaper Thursday. "As elected public officials, it is our duty to unite the nation, not divide it."

For now, however, the tide seems to have turned against the religious.

In recent days, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a longtime ally of the religious, gave preliminary support to a plan to break the Orthodox monopoly at the Western Wall, said Benjamin Rutland, a spokesman for the Jewish Agency, the quasi-governmental body drafting the plan.

The proposal calls for building a section for mixed gender prayers. Under Orthodox customs, men and women pray separately.

On Thursday, a Jerusalem court ruled that police should stop arresting members of a liberal women's Jewish prayer group for praying at the wall wearing religious garb that Orthodox Judaism permits for men only.

The ultra-Orthodox have shown signs of bowing to the pressure. A front-page notice published in the ultra-Orthodox newspaper Yated Neeman called on religious studies students to cooperate with military draft notices and report to draft centers, but not to sign any commitments to military service while negotiations are under way.

Avraham Diskin, a Hebrew University political scientist, said the ultra-Orthodox seem doomed in the short term. "They lost a lot of power and a lot of influence because they are not in the government anymore," he said.

But in the long run, he said the ultra-Orthodox will likely bounce back as they figure out a way to work with Lapid, who sees himself as a future prime minister. He also said the hostile rhetoric against the religious could backfire if the atmosphere turns too toxic.

Meir Porush, a prominent ultra-Orthodox politician, predicted that Yesh Atid would suffer the same fate as Shinui, the secular-rights party led by Lapid's father, Joseph, a decade ago. Shinui captured 15 parliamentary seats in 2003 elections, making it one of the largest factions in parliament, only to flame out within three years.

"Shinui had 15 seats and disappeared after one term," Porush told Army Radio. "I think the same might be for Yair because there is no way that the hatred between religious and secular can be maintained for a long time."

Tweetbot iOS app update brings new media timeline, redesigned image viewer

Twitter client Tweetbot showed its support for Flickr and Vine in the last update to its iOS apps, and making media easier to consume is again a focal point in newly released version 2.8. Debuting with the update is the "media timeline" -- a feed option which'll only shows tweets that include pictures or video. Also, the in-app image viewer has been treated to a full redesign and among the obligatory bug fixes, issues plaguing Instagram previews have been addressed. The update isn't all about pics and clips, though, as the tweet detail view has now been amended so it shows favorite and retweet figures. If you haven't yet received the update, you know where to go. Alternatively, if you don't use the client but like the idea of putting eye-candy in the spotlight, then Tweetbot can be had for $2.99 from the App Store.

Parrot Lovers Mourn, Liz Wilson Passes Away | Steve Dale's Pet World

Liz Wilson was a pioneer in parrot behavior. While she had mixed feelings (at best) about larger parrot species (like Amazons or African grey's, for example) kept as pets. Still, ?she also felt they deserved the best quality of life possible as pets, and worked to educate others to make that happen.. When I received parrot behavior questions from readers (to answer for my national newspaper column) Liz was one of my go-to people. She was always eager to teach. And she taught me, and millions through my columns and also radio shows....not mention the countless students she touched personally. Most people with pet birds are not likely to know Liz's name. But whether they know it or not, she's made a difference in the way which today their pet parrot is treated as a pet. Her contribution to parrot behavior is undeniable. With permission, I print this email which was sent to members of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants from executive director Marjie Alonso.

"It's with sadness that I report to you that Liz Wilson, the founder of our (International?Association of Animal Behavior Consultants) Parrot Division, passed away this weekend.

Liz Wilson was a certified veterinary technician and certified parrot behavior consultant, and lived and working with parrots for over 40 years, with 20 years of experience as a veterinary technician specializing in avian and exotic animal nursing.

With prior training in elementary education and psychology, Liz started working with behavior in companion parrots in 1989. She gained recognition internationally as a parrot behavior consultant thanks to her lectures, seminars, freelance writing and consultations with parrot owners. An experienced and entertaining speaker, she did extensive lecturing with avian veterinary conferences, avicultural conferences, companion parrot conferences, and bird clubs both here in the USA and in Europe.

She wrote extensively for Bird Talk Magazine and Birds USA, as well as the Amazona Quarterly, the Original Flying Machine, the Pet Bird Report, and Parrots Magazine. She wrote a "Parrot Psychology" column in Bird Talk Magazine beginning in 2001 and wrote extensively for the Northern Parrots website, as well as participating in their lively Q&A column. Her articles have been published in Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Spain, Italy, China, Sweden and Russia.

In addition to numerous veterinary articles published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association [JAVMA], the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery [JAMS], and the Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine, she wrote or co-authored eight veterinary textbook chapters, including two for Dr. Greg Harrison's CLINICAL AVIAN MEDICINE (SPIX Publishing), and three for the MANUAL OF PARROT BEHAVIOR edited by Dr. Andrew Luescher (Blackwell Publishing).

Due to her devotion to helping parrots through helping colleagues (and herself) learn more about parrot behavior and working with parrot owners, she founded the Association of Parrot Behavior Professionals in 2001; in 2005, she moved this organization into the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants where it became the Parrot Division. She served the IAABC as the Parrot Division Chair, as well as the Treasurer, holding a position on the Board of Directors for three years. Despite her retirement, she remained active with the organization.

She was dedicated to parrot welfare, education and helping to re-home parrots when needed. In this capacity, she was named the Education Vice President of the Phoenix Landing Foundation in 2004. She was a member of the Parrot Education and Adoption Center and served on the adoption committees for both the San Diego, CA and Anchorage, AK chapters of PEAC.

Despite no longer working directly with veterinarians, she continued her membership of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, of which she had been a member since 1984. In addition to her work with parrot behavior, she was an adjunct faculty member in the veterinary technician department at Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, PA for a decade. She also worked extensively with wildlife rehabilitation for seven years.

She and her husband, David Hearn, had recently retired to her father's old house on a barrier island off the Georgia coast, where she watched the incredible variety of wildlife from every window of their home. Along with her husband, Liz is survived by her feathered companion of more than 40 years, a 60+ year-old female blue and gold macaw named Sam.

Kashmir Csaky,?IAABC Parrot Division Chair said, 'Liz Wilson cast a bright light on the world of parrots. She touched us all. Every person with a parrot has felt her presence, even if they know it or not. They have read her words even if the words were past down from writer to writer, heard her advice even if it was past down from consultant to consultant. Her influence in the parrot world will remain even though she is now gone.

Liz was an atheist. She did not believe in God or an afterlife, but she did believe in ghosts. :-) Everyone and everything that has lived on this earth still remains in some form or another. We breath them in with every breath, we drink them in with every sip of water. They remain with us. While Liz did not accept the idea of an afterlife, I think the scientific concept of or molecules being recirculated is something that she would approve.

I cannot tell you how many times Liz has made me laugh, cry, think and see the beauty of the world. She has shared many jokes and videos on Parrot Opera, that were a reflection of who she was and they were amazing, inspiring, dark, uplifting and fun. I did not always agree with Liz, but I always respected and cared for her. She had, still has my admiration. I feel I must say more, so much more, but words cannot measure or describe Liz.'

Liz's influence will certainly remain here at IAABC and in the world at large. She enjoyed a glass of good bourbon, and so we'll raise our virtual glasses to this remarkable woman.

Famed parrot researcher Irene Pepperberg added, "Liz was an amazing, gracious woman who was always ready to help out; she was a terrific friend and colleague and will be sorely missed."

Avian?veterinarians had enormous respect, Dr. Peter Sakas of Niles, IL said, "Having been involved in avian medicine for over thirty years I have crossed paths with many people, but when it came to the field of bird behavior, there was no one like Liz Wilson. She was a trained veterinary technician, in addition to being an avian behaviorist. She had keen insight into bird behavior, backed by scientific behavior principles, which made her uniquely qualified, and was recognized as a national expert.

"Liz had a 'no nonsense' approach about her, was blunt, and 'told it like it was.' Liz and I had quite a connection and became good friends over the years. But one thing I did endeared me to her. I was the Master of Ceremonies of an avian education seminar several years ago and Liz was a speaker. In my introduction I stated that 'as a behaviorist Liz is not a "cosmic' or 'touchy feely' type behaviorist, her work was shaped by years working as a veterinary technician and steeped in sound behavioral principles....in plain English, Liz Wilson is a meat and potatoes type behaviorist. Liz absolutely loved that introduction and told me that she used that to describe herself after that! ?I was honored to have been her friend and I, as well as the avicultural community will sorely miss her."

It's never too late - parrot owners and veterinarians who treat birds should know the name , Liz Wilson.

Things You Should Know When Planning A Vacation To Vietnam

By: Vietnamtouroffer If you are a first time traveler to Vietnam, the noise and chaos of the cities bustling with traffic and people can come as quite a shock. But amidst all this hustle and bustle, is a country with immense beauty and friendly people. It is a country famous for its breathtaking countryside, excellent food, beautiful and relaxing beaches and cheap massages.

Choosing a vacation package that suits you

Although Vietnam is growing at a fast pace, it still has not developed into a concrete jungle filled with skyscrapers. It still has plenty of its old world charm about it. It is a great destination to consider when you are planning your next vacation. There are several Vietnam vacation packages available to choose from. They have adventure packages, beach and island packages, honeymoon packages, family packages, veterans packages, heritage packages and more. You can always find one that will suit you best. When planning a vacation, you have the option of choosing from pre-set Vietnam vacation packages or you could get one customized to suit you. A customized vacation package will give you the freedom of choosing the places you want to visit, sights you want to see and the date you want to travel.

Tips that can help you save money

When planning a vacation or trip to Vietnam, here are some tips that might help you save some money. Book your air tickets well in advance (at least 4 months or more) as this is normally the time airlines start to discount tickets. Travelling in a group could offer you better discounts on air tickets, hotels and attractions. Get tips and advice regarding cheap Vietnam travel packages and accommodation from a friend or a person who has visited the places you are planning on seeing. What someone has experienced personally will be a lot more helpful. Travelling during the off-peak season or visiting a place that is not so popular with tourists is another way of saving money.

Useful tips on what not to carry to Vietnam

If you have already decided on what type of holiday you want from the choice from the Vietnam travel packages available and how you are going to travel within the country, here are some tips and advice on what is illegal there and what not to carry to the country when you are visiting the country. Illegal drugs and weapons are prohibited. Anyone caught with them are dealt with severely and could even be sentenced to death. Carrying any anti-government propaganda or literature is not allowed and you can be heavily reprimanded. For example: if you are carrying a map of the country ensure that the expanse of water next to Vietnam reads as the Eastern Sea and not the South China Sea as this could be considered as anti-government material. Carrying pornography is illegal in Vietnam. Avoid wearing expensive jewellery or carrying any expensive electronic items and these can easily be robbed. If you must carry these items, ensure the straps are thick and they are carried across the body. Keep your mobile phone in a pocket with a zipper. If you need to use the phone dont stand facing the street when using it turn towards the inside, as it could be snatched out of your hand easily by a thief on a bike.
