Healthy Optimism and A Positive Attitude - The Self Improvement Blog

flyingBy Dr. Robert Henry Schwenk -

Healthy Optimism Will Get You Far

If you want to fly unaided, using only your hands and arms, no amount of positive thinking will allow you to do that flying. As a matter of fact, of course, if you stand on the top corner of a high building and spread your arms and hands and expect to fly when you jump off that building you will kill yourself.

On the other hand, healthy optimism will get you farther down the road of life than pessimism. Health and wealth are just two of the possibilities that may come your way when you hold a consistently positive attitude.

Studies have shown that people who are consistently affirmative in their attitude toward everything and everybody enjoy better health than those who do not. A whole craze has grown up around casting positive vibrations upon the Universe, expecting positive return on thoughts and feelings from the Universe.

Neither Too Hot Nor Too Cold

Healthy optimism, in my opinion, is somewhere between fatalistic pessimism and irresponsible optimism, sometimes called Pollyanna-ism. Fatalistic pessimism might be defined as believing that everything, all the time, will turn out poorly or badly. Irresponsible optimism might be defined as the attitude that everything all the time will turn out well or good. That one can fly unaided would be irresponsible optimism; that one can never fly in any way might be fatalistic pessimism.

Healthy optimism has got to be somewhere in between.

You Can Fly

Of course, you can fly ? in a plane or a giant kite or in the newer para-suits where you look like a flying squirrel. The person who set out to learn to fly, by holding a positive attitude, kept working and inventing until human flight become possible. Enter the Wright brothers and their flying machine.

So positive thought long held will produce results. Those results can be, literally, in any walk of life, through any occupation or avocation. Your life can be improved through healthy optimism.

How Do I Get One?

Simply said, you develop a positive attitude by developing a positive attitude. Yes, I know the former sentence sounds redundant. But is it really redundant? If your attitude is negative at this time, you?ve got to turn things around by turning your mental posture in a different direction.

You?ve got to see the virtuous and benevolent in everything and everybody. Yes, I know that is not easy in every case. Sometimes it is downright difficult when it comes to some people or some disasters.

Your atrocious boss may try to browbeat you into submission with his impossible demands and deadlines. The tornado that destroyed your home and took all your possessions is not easy to see as presenting opportunities to find the good in it.

A Foundation Is Necessary

To develop and keep healthy optimism you need a foundation upon which to build. You need a place where you may position your confidence that things will turn out, if not for the best, than better than first might meet the eye.

You find such a foundation in the meaning of life, which, I believe, is to be happy. You find that happiness by developing a genuine relationship with The All There Is. You develop that relationship by being in constant touch with The All There Is through such activities as the many forms of meditation.

In that relationship you will find total and complete acceptance from The All There Is. In that absolute acceptance you will find happiness that weathers every and all conditions. There is no greater feeling of well-being than to be perfectly accepted just as you are right now. A supreme feeling of well-being is happiness. Said another way, happiness is a feeling of constant well-being.

Develop That Base

Use one of the forms of meditation and begin today to develop healthy optimism that your life be positive. You can turn your life around in this moment by deciding you will develop the foundation and the relationship that leads to the ability to maintain positivity.

Get to it.

I invite you to be Happier In Five Minutes http://www.createspace.com/3724772 and for the Rest of Your Life This book will give a great start on being happy. Buy it now.

Syrian activists say fighting in Aleppo kills 5

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Fighting between Syrian rebels and government forces killed at least five people in the embattled northern city of Aleppo, activists said Sunday.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the dead included a man who has been shot by a sniper near the city's medieval citadel earlier in the day. Several homes were also destroyed in the violence, the Observatory said.

The country's commercial capital and largest city, Aleppo is home to some 3 million people and was once a bastion of support for President Bashar Assad. But the city has been hit by fierce fighting since rebels launched an offensive there in July.

Syria's state news agency says Assad's troops have carried out a "successful operation" in western Aleppo against "terrorist gatherings" ? a reference to the rebel Free Syrian Army. SANA said several rebels had been killed or wounded in the violence, but gave no other details.

On Saturday, a fire sparked by battles between Assad's troops and rebels tore through Aleppo's centuries-old covered market, one of the best-preserved bazaars in the Middle East. It was the worst blow yet to the city's historic center and to a UNESCO World Heritage site in Syria.

The heightened violence in Aleppo drew criticism from the city's industrialists of "insufficient" government protection provided to factories and other businesses in the area.

Fares al-Shihabi, head of Aleppo's Chamber of Industry, told Syria's pro-government al-Watan daily that several previous calls on the government for increased protection against "daily armed attacks" on industrial estates "have gone unanswered."

In response, the chamber was forced to hire guards around-the-clock to protect the businesses against attacks by looters, he added.

Rami Martini, chief of Aleppo's Chamber of Tourism, warned of the vulnerability of tourist sites in the area. He told al-Watan that the violence in Aleppo has "dealt a blow in every sense of the word" to the country's tourism sector.

The Aleppo market, a major tourist attraction with its narrow stone alleys and stores selling perfume, fabrics and spices, had been the site of occasional gun battles and shelling for weeks. But amateur video posted Saturday showed wall-to-wall flames engulfing wooden doors as burning debris fell away from the storefronts. Activists said hundreds of shops were affected.

The souk is one of a half-dozen renowned cultural sites in Syria that have become collateral damage in the civil war.

Elsewhere in Syria, the Observatory for Human Rights said a "strong explosion" rattled the northeastern city of Qamishli on the Turkish border. It said the explosion appeared to be caused by a booby-trapped car but that it was not immediately clear whether there were any casualties.

The Observatory said a handful of civilians were killed in violence in Homs and other areas across the country. In the restive southern town of Daraa ? the city where Syria's anti-Assad uprising began with peaceful protests in March 2011 ? tens of homes that belong to rebels were destroyed in the town of Mezereeb, the group added.

Union head Fehr, NHL Commissioner Bettman hold second straight day of private talks

NEW YORK -- The
best that can be said about back-to-back days of negotiations between the NHL
and the locked out players' association is that the sides are still talking and
making more plans to meet yet again.

While core economic issues still weren't on the agenda Saturday when the opposing groups got together again at the NHL office, dialogue continued on secondary topics that will ultimately go toward forming a new collective bargaining agreement.

NHL Players' Association head Donald Fehr and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman held a second round of private talks Saturday in an effort to move closer to an agreement that would end the ongoing lockout.

While negotiating teams from the union and the league discussed definitions of what makes up hockey-related revenue -- the pool of money the sides are trying to figure out how to split up -- Fehr and Bettman talked about the differences that are keeping the sides apart.

"I spent a few minutes with Gary talking about the overall situation, and we agreed to keep in touch," Fehr said Saturday. "I am sure we will talk again (Sunday). I don't know whether will meet again (Sunday). That remains to be seen.

"I am not going to talk about the specifics, but in general we're trying to discuss how do we find a way to make an agreement. How do we bridge the gap on the major issues that are between us."

The sides met for about four hours before finishing Saturday, and they agreed to meet again on Sunday. The agenda likely will include discussions on health and safety issues -- a topic that made up a chunk of Friday's talks -- and miscellaneous legal things, such as grievances, game tickets and other topics.

Clarifications as to what will fall under the umbrella of hockey-related revenue going forward in the next agreement dominated discussions Saturday. No concrete resolutions were made, and the topic could be revisited on Sunday.

"I am not sure if we have identified discrepancies," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. "I think the nature of what we were trying to do today was to create certainty on interpretations we've had over seven years of this CBA operation.

"These meetings are necessary but they have been described as the underbrush, and certainly they aren't the main issues that need to be tackled to get a deal."

The sides talked for a second straight day on matters separate from the core economic issues that ultimately will have to be hammered out. In the recently expired collective bargaining agreement between the league and the union, the players received a 57 per cent share of hockey-related revenue.

The NHL wants to cut the number down to under 50 per cent in the new deal. The league imposed a lockout on Sept. 16, when the previous agreement ran out, and the sides didn't meet again until Friday.

"Their position on the big stuff has been that a major move consists of changing the players' share from a reduction of 24 per cent to 17 1/2 per cent," Fehr said. "Our initial proposal made a move in their direction. We have amplified that by giving them several different ideas to consider about how to lengthen the agreement to how to be more in line with what they wanted."

Fehr said discussing what exactly makes up hockey-related revenue is significant, because that will determine how much money is there to be pided.

"Today was mainly on HRR issues: definitions, clarifications and so forth," NHL Players' Association special counsel Steve Fehr said. "We had a frank exchange of views. We each expressed our positions in terms of some potential changes and how we thought the current agreement was working."

He wasn't ready to call Saturday's meeting a reason for optimism yet.

"It's a positive thing that we are talking when we weren't talking for some time," he said. "We could be talking about other things, so I'm not sure I'd go there.

"We're continuing the dialogue. It's very much an up-and-down process, so it's hard to say. It's good that we're talking and we're going to talk again tomorrow, hopefully for quite a while."

Some progress was made on Friday on secondary issues related to player safety and drug testing, areas that weren't expected to be contentious. The league and union held two sessions then that totalled about five hours and included an initial meeting between Bettman and Fehr.

At least they got back to talking -- which hadn't happened since a few days before the NHL locked out its players.

All of the issues, big and small, must be ironed out before hockey can get out of the board room and back on the ice. So while the pisive topics still need to be tackled, the smaller ones have to be worked on, too.

The sides still aren't moving closer to a compromise while they talk about other issues.

And that is where the frustration lies. The NHL is waiting for the players' association to make a counterproposal to one the league made in the previous bargaining session more than two weeks ago.

The NHL contends it has stated its position and needs the players' association to make what the league would consider a meaningful counter.

"The whole process is a bit complicated when you're trying to define revenue streams and what should be in and what should be out (of hockey-related revenue)," Steve Fehr said. "It's a bit complicated between the fact that their most recent economic offer says they will go back to the current definitions, yet they are seeking some changes or clarifications in what the current definitions are."

Monetary issues are not expected to come up for discussion in this round of talks. Neither side has indicated it is prepared to make a new offer now regarding how to split up the more than $3 billion annual pot of hockey-related revenue.

Saturday's talks came two days after the league cancelled the remaining preseason games. The regular season is scheduled to start on Oct. 11.

If a deal isn't reached soon, regular-season games will be in danger of being lost. The NHL cancelled the entire 2004-05 season because of a lockout that eventually led to the collective bargaining agreement that expired this month.

Types of Home Inspections | Improvement Home

Your house is a special place. A place where you live and raise a family, but how much do you really know about your house? Knowing that your home is safe and sound is one of the most important things when you are trying to sell a house or just enjoy it's shelter. Home inspections give you the assurance that your home is a safe and sound place. There are many types of home inspections to consider when making a move; lets take a look at a few.

One type of inspection for your house is a pre-listing inspection. When you are planning to sell your home, you need to be able to identify and repair problem areas. An inspection before you place your home on the market can help you price your home to sell quickly.

Another type of inspection to look into is new construction progress inspection. When you are purchasing a new home that is currently under construction, it is advisable to have some things checked out to ensure your future home is going to be one you can enjoy for a long time. One thing I recommend you have performed is a foundation inspection. As soon as the foundation has been completed it should be professionally inspected to avoid any complications in the future.

Types of Home Inspections

A pre-purchase inspection is another type of home inspection that might help you in finding your new place to live. This is very important in making sure that you are getting what you are paying for in your new home.

The last type of inspection that I will mention is the one-year warranty inspection. Most homes come with a 12-month builder warranty. You can protect your investment by checking out the integrity of your home before that 12 month window is up.

Whether you are getting into a new home or moving out of your own, home inspections are the smart choice for you and your wallet.

Franchise Investment Support Increases Due to Loosened Credit and

SOUTHBURY, CT?(Marketwire ? Sep 26, 2012) ? With more and more people seeking business ownership options in this challenging job market, many players in the franchise industry are working hard to open the doors of opportunity to business ownership ? ensuring that those aspiring entrepreneurs can become franchise investors.??We?re seeing positive trends both in lending and education,? says Brian Miller, COO of TES Franchising LLC.?

?First, industry associations like the International Franchise Association (IFA) are aggressively educating the lending community on the powerful investment opportunity franchising offers,? says Miller.??The key message here is that it is oftentimes safer for lenders to consider franchise investments because they?re backed by a proven system of support.?

Secondly, aspiring business owners interested in learning about franchising can reach out to very credible resources of education, such as a franchise business coach, to help them identify whether business ownership is right for them and to help them understand the financing options available.

Franchise business coaches with TES work directly with strategic business partner Guidant Financial.?Both TES and Guidant share a common vision of how to help new and passionate business owners get the financing they need.?TES coaches help prospective entrepreneurs seek out financing early in the process of opening a new business to get a perspective on what is available and what they can afford.

Along with helping people identify financing options, TES coaches also offer guidance and training on franchising and business opportunities, taking clients through a ?discovery process? to identify their income, lifestyle, wealth and equity goals.?Clients are then presented with business concepts to explore how those complement their goals, needs and expectations.

?The financing environment is not as cumbersome as it has been in the past five years,? says David Nilssen, co-founder and CEO of Guidant Financial.??Credit has become more accessible in the last 12 months and we are finding great success through unsecured loans and the Small Business Administration (SBA) loan programs.?

?Understanding the financing options for aspiring business owners makes business ownership an even more viable option for people in career transition,? said Miller.??And it?s been our experience that lending institutions can be even more open to provide funding for a franchise.?

?We believe the best franchise buyers understand their options and can make an informed decision. We work diligently with TES business coaches and invest considerable time with franchise seekers to educate them about their options,? says Nilssen.??Many clients have the ability to capitalize their businesses.?They simply need to understand what their options are, and explore creative ways to obtain funds.?

'Modern Family' Premiere: Gloria's Afraid To Tell Jay That She's ...

While may shows take an immediate jump ahead with their season premieres, skipping the summer altogether, "Modern Family" spent the bulk of its premiere in the immediate aftermath of Gloria's discovery that she's pregnant. It happened around Jay's 65th birthday, and Gloria found herself nervous to tell him.

Perhaps the best thing that could have happened for her was the near-disastrous kidnapping of Jay by Phil and his buddies for a day of fishing and falling in the water. While there, his friends talked about retirement and how much fun they're having doing nothing.

When he got back home, Gloria dropped the bomb, but Jay didn't react the way she feared. He was horrified at the prospect of 65 meaning it was the beginning of the end for him, so he was more than excited at the prospect of being a father again.

Ad campaign aims to get businesses to move to Wis.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Gov. Scott Walker and state economic development leaders on Wednesday unveiled a new "In Wisconsin" ad campaign aimed at getting companies to move to the state and increase their business there.

The $500,000 ad campaign specifically targets companies and site selectors in Illinois and the Twin Cities. It includes print, online and billboard ads starting next week and will run through at least December.

Walker, in a news conference at Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. headquarters, said the campaign is designed to help create private sector jobs by showing other businesses what the state has to offer.

Walker promised both in 2010 during his run for governor and in this summer's recall campaign that he would create 250,000 private sector jobs by 2015, but the state is not on pace to reach that goal.

Creating the semi-private WEDC was one of Walker's highest priorities, and first actions, of the Republican-controlled Legislature last year.

Paul Jadin, the head of WEDC who earlier this month announced he was resigning, said the ad campaign is part of a larger effort to bolster Wisconsin's business environment.

Part of the new initiative includes the launch of a website, inwisconsin.com, designed to help businesses looking for information about starting, moving or growing jobs in Wisconsin.

The new brand centers around a logo that features an image of Wisconsin with the word "in" inside it. That logo is then modified for each of five companies selected to highlight the campaign.

For example, on ads featuring trucking company Schneider National, the logo has the word "driven" above the "In Wisconsin" image. The other four companies being used in the campaign are organic dairy farmer cooperative Organic Valley, industrial automation firm Rockwell Automation, bike manufacturer Trek Bicycle Corp., and renewable resources company Virent.

The new ad and branding campaign was designed over the past nine months by Nelson Schmidt Inc. of Milwaukee and Madison.

WEDC plans to use $500,000 of its annual $2 million marketing budget on the effort.

It's easy to see acne sufferers from afar. But it's not so easy to see the bacteria that trigger their skin inflammation. Now, researchers hope to clear out those bacteria, and clear up the acne, with viruses. The work is in the journal mBio. [Laura J. Marinelli et al., Propionibacterium acnes Bacteriophages Display Limited Genetic Diversity and Broad Killing Activity against Bacterial Skin Isolates]

Many thriving microbe communities inhabit the human face. There is, for example, the pimple-producing species Propionibacterium acnes. Some antibiotic acne treatments have been used so widely that these bacteria have developed resistance. Other treatments cause unpleasant side effects.

But there are viruses that target the bacteria, called phages. Researchers isolated 11 phages from people with and without acne, and sequenced the viral genomes. Phages are generally a diverse bunch, but these viruses were close relatives to each other?which makes sense, as they all evolved to attack bacteria that live in a specific environment: facial hair follicles.

When pitted against the facial bacteria in the lab, the viruses easily mopped up their acne-causing foes. Which may make the phages good candidates for acne treatment?a treatment that might truly go viral.

Live Healthy - Live Pain-Free for Longer | 21C Woman

Sep 25, 2012 by admin

Even though the average lifespan for an average person has been slowly climbing over the past number of decades, surpassing 78 years from 74 years in 1980 in the Unites States, this does not necessarily implies that we are living a healthy lifestyle. Diseases like heart disorders, diabetes and other chronic ailments have grown proportionally among people who are just not old yet.

?Lengthening of morbidity? ? this means, we are actually living longer with these chronic diseases and health couple in their 60s walking with a bicycledisorders, not something that most of us would hope for with longer life expectancy.

Fitness During Middle Age Can Slow Aging

However, Archives of Internal Medicine suggests that a little thinking ahead could change this scenario, and a little fitness in middle-age can actually reshape the flow of aging for our population, even if the people have not exercised previously.

Researchers at the Cooper Institute in Dallas and University of Texas South-western Medical Centre have reviewed medical records of 18,670 middle-aged people, people with an average age of 49, people who were not diagnosed with a chronic disease prior to a check-up, which required them to take a treadmill test to record their aerobic fitness. Researchers then divided the group into five fitness categories.

Going through the Medicare claim records of the same individuals from 1999 to 2009, by which most participants were in their late 70s or 80s. The results showed that others who were the least fit in their middle-age were more likely to have serious chronic issues in their early aging life.

Extending, Not Preventing

However, adults who have been found to be the fit in their mid-age developed the same health condition, but their problems appeared considerably later in life than that of the less fit cohort. So people who were aerobically fit suffered from chronic diseases in the last five years of their life, instead of the more common last 20 years.

According to Dr. Benjamin Willis, a staff epidemiologist at the Cooper Institute, being physically fit in your mid-age shortens the time someone actually spends suffering from an injury, which leaves the former free of chronic diseases gutting his post-retirement years, which improves the quality of life.

Interestingly, the main observation in the study was that the effects of fitness helped in delaying illness than prolonging your life. Nevertheless, the fitness group tends to live longer owing to their illness free life.

Of course, aging is completely dependent on the individual and is a complicated process, even in the presence or absence of fitness in the person?s life; it definitely is an important element in determining the lifespan of an individual. While genetics and luck to a certain extent can be held as a cause for aerobic fitness, much of a person?s fitness capability depends upon his physical activity in their middle-age.

Exercise, Do Not Hesitate

Hence, exercising in your middle-age will give you aging benefits over less fit people, who lead a sedentary life and tend to get chronic diseases in their late middle age. The?decision to lead a healthy post-retirement, or having chronic diseases is in your control.

Dr. Willis said, one does not have to become an athlete to achieve such a simple goal, but a little time scheduled for exercises in the day can actually help the individual lead a happy and disease free life during their old age. Hence, it?s all a matter of exercising that can make all the difference.

New chemistry technique reproduces nature's elusive complexity

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2012) ? Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute have shown how to synthesize in the laboratory an important set of natural compounds known as terpenes. The largest class of chemicals made by living organisms, terpenes are made within cells by some of the most complex chemical reactions found in biology.

The new technique, described in an advance online edition of the journal Nature Chemistry on Sept. 23, 2012, mimics a crucial but obscure biochemical phenomenon that allows cells to make terpenes. The discovery may one day result in cheaper, fully synthetic versions of the cancer drug Taxol, the antimalarial compound artemisinin and hundreds of other useful terpene products.

"It's exciting for us because we're now making molecules that have never been made in the laboratory before, and we've done this by first observing what nature does," said the senior investigator for the study Ryan A. Shenvi, a chemist at Scripps Research.

Powerful Biological Functions

Terpenes take their name from one of their best-known representatives, the paint thinner turpentine -- a derivative of pine sap. Many terpenes, like those in turpentine, are small, plant-made molecules that turn into vapor at relatively low temperatures and waft easily through the air. These often serve as important chemical signals for plants, and are used by humans in fragrances and flavorings.

Some terpenes are more complex, and are synthesized by plants and other organisms as powerful cellular defense mechanisms. "Having such strong biological functions can make them very useful in medicine," said Shenvi. Paclitaxel (Taxol), a widely used cancer drug, is a terpene derived from the bark of the Pacific yew tree. Artemisinin, the basis for a major class of antimalarial therapy, is a terpene made by the sweet wormwood herb. But the terpene family is highly diverse and also includes vitamin A, menthol, cholesterol and steroids.

Many terpenes, including Taxol and artemisinin, are made naturally in cells by processes that are so complicated, and so hard to understand, that chemists haven't been able to recreate them fully using organic chemistry techniques. The commercial production of these two medicines still depends on the relatively expensive harvesting of starting compounds from plants.

Taking Up the Challenge

In the new study, Shenvi and a postdoctoral researcher in his laboratory, Sergey V. Pronin, set out to recreate one of the two major terpene synthesis processes in nature. Known as tail-to-head polycyclization, this process is used by cells to make numerous complex terpenes. (The other major terpene synthesis process, head-to-tail polycyclization, is already partially reproducible with organic chemistry, and results in terpenes that include steroids.)

The tail-to-head polycyclization process begins with a relatively simple chain of carbon atoms, each of which is decorated with other, mostly hydrogen atoms. The goal of the process is to bend this linear hydrocarbon structure in a way that yields one ringlike structure, then another, and so on in a "polycyclic" chain.

A crucial feature of this process is the effective displacement of positive charge from one carbon atom on the structure to another, in just the right sequence. What makes this feat so challenging for chemists to reproduce, and even to analyze, is that this positively charged state in principle can slide along numerous alternative pathways on the emerging structure. Moreover, because it powerfully attracts negatively charged ions, this carbon-based positive charge, which chemists refer to as a carbocation ["carbo-cat-eye-on"], is inclined to snuff itself out almost immediately.

"Carbocations are notoriously tricky to include in synthetic procedures in the laboratory, because their lifetimes are so short," said Shenvi. "And yet nature has evolved tools to handle them."

Chief among these tools are cyclase enzymes, which hold terpene molecules that are under construction and use their own charged structures to protect carbocations from being quenched -- at least long enough to let them do their work. Chemists who have sought to synthesize terpenes in the laboratory generally have done so without trying to mimic these enzymes' charge sequestration mechanism.

"The natural synthetic pathways were assumed to be much too difficult and maybe impossible," Shenvi said. "But we decided that we would have to recreate it somehow if we wanted to develop a broadly useful technique for making this group of terpenes."

Following Nature's Lead

Pronin and Shenvi eventually found that a type of vinyl epoxide seems to serve as a partial substitute for cyclase enzymes. "We think that it effectively holds the negatively charged counteranion, which would otherwise follow and quench the carbocation before the reaction is complete," said Pronin.

As a demonstration of the power of their new technique, the chemists used it to make two different types of terpene, known as funebrene and cumacrene, starting from relatively simple organic chemistry ingredients. These terpene compounds had never before been fully synthesized outside of living cells.

Shenvi emphasizes that this report represents merely an initial, foundational description of this new strategy, and that technical obstacles still prevent its widespread use. "But once we can get past these obstacles, we should be able to use this new approach to fully synthesize many other valuable compounds," he said. "Basically the entire realm of terpenes will be reproducible with organic chemistry."

Funding for the study, "Synthesis of highly strained terpenes by non-stop tail-to-head polycyclization," was provided by a start-up grant from the Scripps Research Institute and a grant from Eli Lilly & Co.

German bishops: Catholics who opt out of Church tax cannot receive sacraments

CWN - September 21, 2012

The German Catholic bishops have announced that any Catholic who formally withdraws from the Church, by announcing a decision not to pay the ?church tax,? will not be allowed the receive the sacraments or hold office in the Church.

With a formal canonical decree, which has been approved by the Vatican and takes effect September 24, the German bishops said that someone who formally removes himself from the Church commits ?a grave offense,? and his action should be regarded as ?a deliberate and willful alienation.? Such persons, the decree says, will not be allowed to receive the sacraments unless he is in danger of death. Nor can such individuals serve as godparents, members of parish councils, or officers in ecclesial organizations.

The German bishops? decree was prompted by the mounting numbers of baptized Catholics who announce their formal withdrawal from the Church in order to escape the ?church tax.? In Germany, if a citizen is a declared member of a recognized religious body, a portion of his taxes are forwarded to that denomination. The ?church tax,? collected by the government, provided about ?5 billion ($6.5 billion) in funding for the German Catholic Church last year.

Some Catholics?notably including canon lawyer Hartmut Zapp, who has challenged the ?church tax? in court?have argued that registration for the ?church tax? involves only a political act, and should not affect one?s spiritual status. Others have protested that the ?church tax? supports the ?institutional Church,? while they regard themselves as members in a Catholic community that is not necessarily represented by the hierarchical structure of the Church.

In issuing their decree, the German bishops say that it is impossible to withdraw from the ?institutional Church? while remaining a part of the Catholic community. The bishops announce that if any individual announces his decision to drop his enrollment in the Church, his pastor should contact him and explain the consequences of this action.

CORRECTED-FTSE 100 ebbs lower as China adds to earnings worries

(corrects UK mining comment from Liberum in par 8&9 not

Jefferies)

* FTSE 100 down 0.6 percent

* Miners lead faller after weak China PMI

* Oils fall as commodity prices soften

* Imperial Tobacco gains as results reassure

LONDON Sept 20 (Reuters) - Heavyweight miners dragged the

UK's blue chip index lower by midday on Thursday after weak data

from China raised more concerns over earnings in the sector.

By 1054 GMT, the FTSE 100 was down 35.18 points, or

0.6 percent, to 5,853.30, as the index continued to edge away

from 6-month highs which it hit after the U.S. joined Europe in

taking action to stimulate the global economy.

"No one really wants to short the markets with central banks

ready to use so much artillery, but at the minute you are

thinking where is the growth?" Robert Quinn, strategist at

Standard & Poor's IQ, said.

Earnings growth concerns dented the mining sector

, which shed 2.5 percent after China's HSBC

Manufacturing PMI notched up its eleventh straight month of

contraction in another sign that the squeeze on western

consumers is still causing belt tightening.

There was weak PMI data in the euro zone too, which showed

the decline in business steepened unexpectedly in September,

highlighting the lack of confidence companies have in splashing

their cash.

That sentiment has carried through to investors too and is

reflected in volumes on the FTSE 100's index, which were just 24

percent of their 90-day daily average around midday, as big

players such as hedge funds and institutions keep their powder

dry in uncertain markets.

Evraz and Anglo American were among the top

falling miners, down 4 percent and 3.6 percent, respectively,

although volumes were just 50 percent of their 90-day daily

average.

In a note on the large cap miners, Liberum downgraded its

rating on Anglo to "sell" and Rio Tinto to "hold" on

concerns over their earnings outlook.

"Today's investment environment looks in many ways similar

to late 2008; virtually all commodities (bar copper) are into

the cost structure, high cost capacity is being curtailed,

long-dated projects deferred, and synchronised global stimulus

is underway," Liberum said.

The market implied five-year earnings per share compound

annual growth rate for miners in developed Europe is -6.2

percent, compared with global equities on 0.7 percent.

ENERGY WEAK

Energy stocks also eased as the slowdown in

demand from the world's hungriest consumer of commodities helped

weaken oil and metal prices, which will eat into commodity

producers' profits.

The weak oil price, however, provided a boost for those

companies that guzzle gas in large quantities such as the

airlines with International Airlines a big gainer up

1.6 percent.

Elsewhere on the upside, Imperial Tobacco rallied

1.5 percent as the cigarette maker's end-year trading update

reassured investors.

"Imperial's in line FY 2012 trading statement should come as

a relief, given the degree of nervousness ahead of the

statement... The shares continue to trade at (around a) 15

percent discount (EV EBITDA basis) to its International peer

group which given the company's strong cash generation is

undeserved," Panmure Gordon said in a note.

With the UK benchmark already up around 12 percent since

June, investors will probably need a new impetus to push the

market beyond the six-month highs hit last week and towards the

psychologically important 6,000 level.

That could potentially come from China, if the data is weak

enough to galvanise the authorities into fresh economic stimulus

measures.

Maria Miller backs same-sex civil marriage - Blog - The F-Word

by Laura // 19 September 2012, 15:47

wedding cake.jpgThe new Secretary of State, Maria Miller, yesterday came out in favour of civil marriage for same-sex couples. In her piece in the Independent's new comments section, she says:

At the moment the state does not support same-sex couples in the same way that it supports a man and woman choosing to celebrate their commitment. Many people in civil partnerships already refer to their partner as their "husband" or "wife", but they are not technically "married" and do not have the option to become so. I see no reason to perpetuate this.

This is good news. As someone in a heterosexual relationship, I have no interest in fitting my relationship into a predefined box with lots of associations that I personally dislike, but I think everyone should have the right to get married if they want to, regardless of their sexuality. The current set-up of civil partnerships for same-sex couples and marriages for heterosexual couples sends out a clear message that heterosexuality is more valued in our society than homosexuality, and that's wrong. Legalising same-sex marriage would also end the injustice of trans people's marriage's being invalidated when they change their legal gender.

However, I don't think Miller's piece is a "great article", as Stonewall tweeted earlier today. The Secretary of State's reasons for wanting to introduce civil marriage for same-sex couples are rooted in the conservative notion of marriage as the bedrock of society:

[Marriage] helps bind society together and strengthens our communities. [...] My view is simple; marriage is hugely important. It makes us stronger. Vital family ties will be forged when two people choose to commit. I believe that marriage is an institution that benefits Britain and extending it will make sure it stays as important - and relevant - as ever. Love, fidelity, commitment and stability are something to celebrate.

I find it disappointing that some gay marriage campaigners have been willing to use these kind of arguments to support their cause. Being in a signed and sealed monogamous sexual relationship does not make you any more valuable to society than someone who is single or poly or prefers to have close non-sexual relationships. An individual's ability to care for others, to contribute to their local community, to commit to their loved ones and to bring up children is not contingent on their marital status. Marriage doesn't magically stop abusive people being abusive or turn selfish people into pillars of society.

I don't believe that married couples - whether heterosexual, lesbian or gay - are deserving of any more social recognition than anyone else, let alone financial benefits granted through the tax system. If you feel marraige is right for you, then great, I'm happy for you. But it doesn't make you a better or more valuable person, as Maria Miller would have us believe. It doesn't mean that your relationship is any more important, committed or valid than any other form of relationship.

I don't support marriage rights for same-sex couples because I want to "strengthen" the "institution of marriage", as the Independent's petition text puts it. I have no love for an institution founded on the abuse and exploitation of millions of women, regardless of the different forms it may take today. I support equal marriage rights because I support equal legal rights for all and an end to homophobic discrimination. Buying into the conservative fetishising of marriage is unnecessary, and ignores the many people of all sexualities who are not or never will be married.
