Henley, Langley share Sony Open lead

PGA Tour rookies Russell Henley and Scott Langley finished Saturday's third round tied atop the leaderboard at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Henley carded a bogey-free, 3-under 67 in round three, while Langley posted a 5-under 65.

The duo ended 54 holes at 17-under-par 193. Their total set a new 54-hole tournament scoring record, bettering the mark of 194, which John Huston set in 1998 and Brad Faxon matched in 2001. Henley and Langley will play together on Sunday for the fourth straight round.

"It's been great. I've played a lot of rounds with Scotty ... and we get along great out there and have similar personalities when we play. It's helped me a lot," Henley said in a TV interview of his pairing with Langley.

Tim Clark posted his second straight 66 to end three rounds at minus-14.

Charles Howell III, a two-time runner-up at this event, shot a 67 to match Scott Gardiner (65) in fourth at 13-under-par 197 at Waialae Country Club.

Pat Perez (67), Matt Jones (64), Danny Lee (66) and Chris Kirk (68) are tied for sixth place at minus-12.

Henley had a steady round with three birdies and 15 pars. He sank a 17-foot birdie try at the second. At the eighth, his 9-footer for birdie found the bottom of the cup.

The 23-year-old, who won twice on the Web.com Tour last year, ran off nine consecutive pars from the ninth. Henley 2-putted for birdie at the last to match Langley in the lead.

"I've never been in this situation before, but hopefully it's real easy and I'm real relaxed and I don't have any nerves," Henley said in a televised interview. "But I'm probably going to be nervous and probably just going to have to try to slow myself down, and just enjoy the day. It is a lot of pressure out here, even the first three days, so I can't imagine what it's going to be like (Sunday)."

Langley birdied the first from off the green, then birdied the fourth from 16 feet out. He stumbled to a bogey at the sixth, but caught fire from there.

The 23-year-old left-hander poured in a 23-foot birdie putt on the seventh. Langley 2-putted for birdie on the par-5 ninth and made it two in a row with a 9-foot birdie effort on No. 10.

That gave Langley a share of the lead. He moved one ahead with a 12-foot birdie try at 13. Langley faltered to a 3-putt bogey at 14, but atoned for that mistake with a 13-foot birdie putt at 15.

Langley was back in the lead at that point, but he closed with three pars in a row as Henley joined him at minus-17 with a birdie at the last.

"It's been great playing with Russ so far, and certainly kept me calmer than I might have otherwise been. We joke around, we have a lot of fun as you can probably tell. We're just taking it all in and having a great time together. It's going to be a lot of fun (Sunday)," Langley said in a TV interview.

Matt Kuchar (70) is one of three players tied in 10th at 11-under 199, while Tim Herron is among five players at minus-10.

NOTES: Henley has three Web.com Tour wins in all ... Langley leads the field with 19 birdies and 9.181 Strokes Gained-Putting ... Henley has gone 43 holes without a bogey ... If either Henley or Langley breaks 67 on Sunday, they will set the tournament's 72-hole scoring record, which stands at 260.
