The New Graph Search and What it Could Mean For You

Facebook is at it again and it?s taken on a new kind of strategy to compete with the Search Engine giant Google.? The popular search site has rapidly been expanding its ability to use ads effectively with a user?s location and recommendations of fans.? To compete with this new era of digital advertising, Facebook has launched a limited beta release of the Search Graph, enabling users to find products, services or businesses that their friends have recommended or liked in the past.

No relevant results? No problem Facebook?s partner Bing is on hand to give you web searches best suited for your questions. How does this work? Here is an example, Imagine yourself traveling to a new city for business and you want to know the best pizza joint to check out while in town, just put in the search box ?What?s the best pizza place to eat at in this city?? It will automatically generate results that are based off of what your connections and friends have shared or liked in the past.

What does this mean for online retailers?

The more active and larger your Facebook fans are, the more likely you will appear on user?s search results.? If you have? already been advertising on Facebook and running contests that generated a lot of shares, likes and comments, then you are going to benefit from the Share Graph. On the other hand if you have been neglecting your page or it looks a little bare, then now is the time to get posting!

Here are some tips on getting you started:

  • Make sure you have all the correct and updated information about your business in the about section located under your profile picture.
  • If you are a ?brick and mortar? business, then include a valid address so users can find you easily when searching.
  • Always share relevant content on your page.? Ask yourself is this post going to get my fans commenting or sharing? It should always be interesting and engaging
  • Update your videos and photos regularly. Make your page enticing to current and new fans. Encourage them to come back.
  • Run a contest or give-away. This is one of the best things you can do for your page. User?s like to sign up for free things or coupons, so get creative and put something out there! Don?t forget to announce a winner at the end of your contest!

Your Facebook page should be viewed as a source of information and a place where like-minded people can connect. If your products are for the wilderness, then all the fishers, hunters, campers and hikers should be hanging out on your Facebook page!
